Mobile Operating Systems

Would someone knowledgeable provide a list of the most recent smartphone models with their corresponding Operating Systems? I have indeed done my research, but it seems this information is scattered all around. Many thanks in anticipation!

i have the HTC Kaiser with WM6.1 which i think is ok but from looking at the screen shots of WM6.5 this will be more user friendly.
I've also used the appple system but hate it in that all apple want you to be able to do is install there apps only. i know you can fix it but they just seem to be against you all the time.
I think you have to ask your self what you want from a phone etc. as my htc has crappy camera but gps is excellent and it does what i want.

Some omnias are winmo, some are not. Looks like there are teo new winmo 6.5 omnias about to come out, and 3 others getting upgrades from 6.1

I think it's just their high-end phone branding, it doesn't mean anything. See also XPERIA brand being used for WinMo and Android

which is the best operating system for mobiles, iv only really tried symbians on nokias, i know they have issues all the time, but i guess im sort of used to it, is their a really good OS that i should change to

Well you need to decide what you want to do before you can decide on an OS. If all you need to do is make calls and nothing else then get a Nokia 6310 and you'll be happy forever.

As I see it for a smartphone you have 4 choices

Symbian - Mature, multitasking, wide range of hardware
iPhone - Slick, no true multi tasking (except music, mail etc) limited hardware choice
Windows Mobile - fairly large handset range, none very good looking imho
Android - limited handset range again, but growing, multi tasking, I find the hardware below par at the moment

So - what do you want from a phone?

I think you overstate Symbian's usability. It's a bit, well, crap. Oh, and you didn't mention Blackberry, which is definitely more of a smartphone OS than Symbian

However I wouldn't say Symbian is crap - far from it actually. Mature - yes, wide range of handets? Certainly is. Multi-tasking - tick on that front too.

There are pluses and minuses to all OS's - the new Blackberry devices look nice, but delve deep and you'll see some horrible menus that are rather dated. Windows Mobile I use on my work phone but frankly I've not liked using WinMo for a good few years now, I really don't rate it at all. Android - probably my OS of choice if there was some decent hardware to run it, alas in my opinion there isn't, yet. So for me that left iphone - so I got a factory unlocked 3GS and until something else comes along, it does me well.

Windows Mobile I use on my work phone but frankly I've not liked using WinMo for a good few years now, I really don't rate it at all.

It really depends on the phone, HTC are putting some really good OEM stuff like TouchFlo into their phones now to make it look less like unskinned Windows Mobile and more slick and regular person friendly

Same with 6.5, it doesn't look like windows mobile any more at a glance and the new features are good

There are also benefits for Android and WinMob in that the restrictions to developing and releasing for them are practically nil as neither has to use their respective marketplace if they don't want to (speed of release for example) unlike iPhone where you must comply to Apple's control and wait for the app to pass through (so to speak) before possibly being allowed onto the marketplace which is currently quite saturated with copycat apps

In terms of the actual hardware, Windows Mobile seems to be getting the best hardware, the fastest processors and highest res screens are running Windows Mobile, the downside is that until Microsoft gets its act together and gets Windows Mobile 6.5.1 out, Windows Mobile users need to use a stylus, i.e. it's not fully finger friendly yet and may not be for a while.

The iPhone has the capacitive touchscreen and is fairly finger friendly but its format has been copied. Android is where the excitement seems to be, there are rumours of lots of manufacturers moving their next generation hardware from WinMo to Android, in some ways it's a shame because by the time the next-gen hardware is out Microsoft will have got Windows Mobile up to the standard it needs to be at to compete with iPhone and the Android phones.

I have no problem using thumbs with 6.1 and SPB with fingermenu and a hardware or other keyboard on my x1

well im not a heavy user of the fancy stuff, but i currently have tomtom on my Nokia N73, and now i'v bought an n79, so i justr like to use apps that make life easier

I'm on the verge on buying a HTC Hero, everything I've read about Andriod makes it seem like the perfect Mobile OS. Question is do I get the Hero or wait for the Leo. Decisions, decisions!

WinMo7 isn't that far away either
