    Smile New Phone

    Hi guys

I currently have 2 phones which I carry on my person at all times; Sony Ericsson K800i and HTC Touch HD
Both are fairly old now, I only keep the K800i as its incredibly reliable and sturdy no matter how many times I drop it.
But I am looking to upgrade the Touch HD which although I don't actually use to make calls, makes a pretty good pocket PC, its main use include mobile browsing and media playback for which I use coreplayer. My main issue is that the small processor can't handle some of the lower quality videos I throw at it. I feel an upgrade to a 1Ghz cpu really could solve the issue as from running benchmarks I only need a little more power to play a whole bunch of videos.
Are there any good reccomendations out there? I don't think coreplayer is of yet available for android or even windows phone 7.
Or if anyone can reccomend a reasonably priced tablet that will play most video formats including h.264 encoded mkv files.

    Thanks

    Re: New Phone

You'll proabably get the same recomendations from Android fans but here goes

    HTC Desire
HTC Desire HD (if you want a bigger screen)
Google Nexus one (can be made to look & operate like a Desire)
Google Nexus S (Due to be released tomorrow)
Samsung Galaxy s (Much improved with firmware releases but I'm still wary)
Samsung Galaxy Tab (smaller that an Ipad and can make calls but still pretty pricey)

I would second android phones. You can use the rockplayer app to play most files including mkv.

Anyone of those will be lovely. I went from a HTC HD2 to a HTC Desire and love the difference.

    Or perhaps a new WindowsPhone?

    Re: New Phone

I wouldn't bother with Window Phone 7 at the present time, if you want a locked down os & environment iPhone is a much more compelling proposition. Currently Windows phone is nowhere near a fully rounded o/s & environment and MS have admitted as much. Best to give it another 12 months.......if it's still around by then.......Kin anyone ?????

I would second the HTC Desire suggestion, its the phone I'm looking to get in the new year.

I would say though that although the HTC Desire HD has a larger screen than the Desire it has the same resolution so you get 480x800 on a 3.7 inch screen (Desire) and 480x800 on a 4.3 inch screen (Desire HD). Same resolution over a large area? No thanks HTC.

I am also on the hunt for a contract for the normal Desire, they don't seem to drop in price though.

I might get one on O2 shop £15x24mths (no data package) = £360, PAC OH payg number and give her the 100min/txt from O2. + get a £10 goodie bag from giffgaff with data and PAC my payg number; this would work out £25/mth; giving me min/txt/data and OH min/txt. Handset does not need to be unlock cos giffgaff uses O2 network. Can't seem to find a cheaper option.

I also have problems with getting a Desire. I'm with Vodafone and I kind of have to stay with them. The reason for this is that I live in the basement at home and there's no reception down here. The only mobile network with a range extender? Vodafone.

So I have to stick with Vodafone for the time being. I have an HTC Magic on Vodafone atm so it would be futile to go and get a SIM free Desire from an independent vendor of mobile phones put my Vodafone SIM in the Desire because I'd pay £360 ish for a SIM free desire and I'd have to carry on paying a £30 a month contract fee for the Vodafone price plan. The £30 a month I pay now being partly to pay for the HTC Magic.

My plan is to ring Vodafone up at some point before May 2011 (when my 18 month contract ends) and pay the dosh to end the contract early and ask for a Desire.

    Hope that all makes sense!

    Re: New Phone

I have the desire Z which i hated in the beginning, but it's grown on me. And now I love it. Although i must say, the Desire STD would be just as good, the only diff? No keyboard. I don't think the HD would be a big upgrade from the Desire STD, except the camera maybe?
    Not major differences for sure.

I'm guessing your Desire is new? If so, what made you choose the Desire over the Desire HD?

If you think they're old, you ought to see the clunky old relics I use. I think Nefertiti and Akhenaten were still on the phone in Egypt when these were released. I'm expecting an approach from the British Museum about their status as an exhibit any time now.

Bet they don't do anything other than make phone calls (with incredible signal strength and batteries that last for several yeards between charges) - hardly worth calling phones tbh....

Having briefly used my better halves Desire HD, and seeing it lying about the house quite a lot, I would actually say ... shock horror... the Desire HD is a bit too big! :O

And that is coming from someone that really, really wanted one up until now. I do think the styling of the HD is much better than the regular Desire, but I'm not sure you really need that size of screen. One upside is that the full QWERTY keyboard is more usable in portrait mode, but I prefer the keypad style T9/multitap instead.

I found my HD quite large at first, coming from a tocco lite, but now I don't even notice it's size in the slightest. It seems totally normal and when I hold my girlfriends iphone 4 it feels tiny and actually too small!
