Question Any tips to sanitise phone?

Just bought a second-hand SE X10 Mini Pro from a relative - yes, I know it's obsolete, but I wanted a cheap phone to give to another relative.

Problem is that the person I bought it from is a ciggy smoker, and although they're not a 40-a-dayer the phone still stinks of ciggies, especially the back (/battery) cover. I've (carefully!) tried a couple of things including PC cleaning foam, Lime-scented hand cleanser and other scented products, but so far nothing's worked for more than about five minutes.

Is there any way to de-stink this - other than going out and replacing the case plastic, (which probably isn't that expensive <£10)? But of course that won't work for the screen etc (although those are a lot less odorous - go figure)

Alcohol wipes may do the trick. Or any alcohol based cleaner I guess as the alcohol will kill any bacteria that is creating the smell. Just be extra careful not to saturate it or you could end up with a dead phone. Also clean inside the battery compartment, battery and the back of the slider.

I would try to get hold of some 100% alcohol as this should do the job and make sure that the phone battery has been removed a few hours beforehand too.

Make sure you also test a small area of the phone beforehand too.

The X10 Mini Pro was released in the middle of 2010 - it hardly sounds obsolete.

It can run Android 2.1 and an update is available:

That "obsolete" crack was because that 2.1 update was the first - and last - update for the phone - the "Arc" based replacement has already broken cover (@CES). So unless you go custom ROM then you're stuck there, (I've got a "big" X10 myself, so am in the same position). From inspection of the various forums (SE's own, Android, SE-owners, etc) X10 owners are VERY angry about this state of affairs, (petitioning SE for a change, vowing never to buy another SE device, etc). Apologies that this is off topic - but I thought some background would be useful.

All: many thanks for the suggestions - I'll give 'em a go
