Using credit up when I'm not using phone

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem whilst using a tmobile pulse, every time I check my balance its dropped by 18p or 26p for example, my phone is just sat there doing nothing.
Also I am on txt appeal so it costs me 4p for a txt, I tried sending a txt but was told I had insufficient funds when in fact I had 28p, I put sim back in my old phone and sent a txt no problem, I am totally perplexed by this, the money draining from my credit is my biggest concern.
I checked earlier and it was £10.02, then checken 2hrs later and it was £9.77. does anyone have any ideas?

Are you being charged for data use?

Being Android, you really need to have some kind of internet bundle as there are a bunch of different things that can be running in the background sending and receiving data. You can turn these off, but smart phones really are better with these things turned on.

As for it not letting you send text when you have credit, I don't know about that. However, it could be reserving some credit for the data I mentioned above.

There are various apps out there for Android that will cull data usage altogether, but as Funkstar pointed out, it's really not designed for that kind of usage.

I have discovered the money is being paid to something called TMO network coupon 2101 QOS1000, does anybody have any idea what it is, and how do I stop it?

A quick google says its T-Mobiles internet charge for bandwidth use, phoning them and getting them to stop it will make it stop but that will stop your phone from having net access.

You can also disable the data connection in Android

Oh, cheers for that mate, so I get charged for not using it, seems a bit of a cheek to me, no point in having a smart phone if you cannot use it to its full potential, do you happen to know if other phone providers charge you when you are not using services, or is it just tmobile?

But you are using data, well, the phone is. Applications on the phone will be checking for updates and so on. So you may not be directly using the data but your phone is so you pay for it.

You will have to forgive me guys but I really don't understand this, so even though my phone is just sat there it's costing me, why does this not happen with other 3g phones, I have had phones which have internet capability for years, but never been charged unless I actually connect to the net. I just don't understand why I am charged, maybe I'm a bit slow, but I just don't get it..

All depends what apps and widgets you have installed. Most people with a smartphone go for a package that includes some form of data, I use giffgaff, £10 gets me data, unlimited txts and enough calls to keep me going. Its not a contract so I can cancel or go down to pure pay as you go whenever I want.

Ah I see, as far as I know I have no apps, I only bought the phone on tuesday and hav'nt done a thing with it yet as I noticed my payg credit was draining away, I just have payg, I was'nt aware there were other things like you mentioned, I guess I should get to a Tmobile store and find out what my options are.

Just because you haven't installed any aditional apps, doesn't mean there aren't already apps on there doing exactly what Flibb spoke about. I don't know anything about the Pulse, but the HTC handsets I've used all pull down the current weather for your location from the internet. it's not a lot of data, but a few pence worth probably if you are paying by the KB. You probably want the Internet Booster added to your phone. It's £2.50 for 5 days, £5 for 1 month or £20 for 6 months.

i have never put any money into Mobile phone as i think they are a rip off and as for the data allowance fluff that.

my sister once had her laptop running of her contract phone and managed to get the bill up 2 900 quid in 4 weeks.

Some people need a mobile phone, and there are plenty of deals out there to get an acceptable rate for your planned usage. I pay 15pm + 5pm for data on contract, and the included calls/SMs are perfect for the way I use the phone. This is certainly something your sister failed to consider for her purchase, as a 3 grand bill for a month certainly points to a data tariff that was unsuitable for the purpose she used it for. That's not the mobile operators fault I'm afraid, unless they mis-sold it to her in the first place.

Back to the OP, I can think of two things that can cause this, the main one having been already suggested with various apps on your device making connections to the network to pull updates down. I've also been burned in the past when my missus downloaded a wallpaper from a site and not read the small print; I started receiving charges for random texts 6 months later. To be honest, I've never thought that PAYG contracts are suitable for use with smartphones - smartphones are all about added services which often require packet connections to operate. This is why you get an i-Phone or Blackberry (or whatever) branded tariff with those devices; network costs don't interfere with user experience of smartphone services.

You definitely need some form of data package to cope with an Android phone, to help manage it I reccomend the app 3G Watchdog, as a rough guide basic 'net use, facebook and email uses about 400mb a month
