Recommend me an Android tablet (Shield has been discontinued)

I am looking for a recommendation for an Android tablet for general use including gaming. This is for my 7 year old son, but I don't want to buy him a dummed down kid's tablet.

Previously I would have gone for an nVidia Shield, (I have already brought one for my other son), but it appears that nVidia have quietly discontinued it, as it is no longer available to buy from any of the usual places such as Scan.co.uk or Amazon.

Can anyone suggest an alternative. My budget is to spend up to £200. For that I would like an 8" screen size, preferably full HD, with at least Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), or equivalent Cyanogen mod community support. I would prefer not to buy an Amazon Kindle fire tablet as many of my son's favourite games are not available in the Amazon app store.

    Simples

    HotukDeals thread here.

I have one of these and can thoroughly recommend it. Fast, waterproof, great screen, sd card slot & unlockable so you can put CM on it. Wont officially be upgraded to Nougat because of the CPU but I wouldn't let that put you off.

Re: Recommend me an Android tablet (Shield has been discontinued)

I got a Shield K1 from BT Shop, but they seem to be out of stock as well. When I got it, it was £149, but then it went missing from all the shops and came back a few weeks later at £169 - possibly people profiting from the Brexit vote. I had a PriceSpy alert going for it, and BT shop did have it come down to £149 again, but that obviously cleared them out.

I think eBuyer and BT Shop will let you add your name to a list to be notified when it becomes available, but if you can't be bothered to wait, that Z3 mentioned by Jimborae is perfectly decent...

Edit: Going on the nVidia site, they have the RRP as £169, so it looks like it's them profiteering. They mention it's available at Amazon, BT Shop and Overclockers, and Overclockers have it for £149, but zero stock.

I was about to push the button on the Sony Z3 Compact myself, but just checked CEX before and noticed you can buyyou the Samsung Galaxy S2 Tablet 8" (32Gb) for £200

This is the current high end device from Samsung, although I believe the S3 isn't far away.

    AMOLED Retina class screen
20% Lighter than the ipad mini 2
    Micro SD
    3Gb RAM / Better processor
Grade A stock (should be like new) / 2 year warranty

Instant buy for me, really looking forward to it.

Mine is Wifi, Grade A. Can't see it on the site now but there's a EE locked (presumably cellular + WiFi?) Grade B for £200

Yep thanks, that's the older model isn't it? Still totally worth it though and makes it a tough choice between that & Sony.

Didn't know there was an older model? Different processor spec?

Not that I'm concerned, anything 2013 on wards it powerful enough for my needs.

Re: Recommend me an Android tablet (Shield has been discontinued)

Yeah uprated cpu/gpu & battery I believe. Everything else the same and as you say more than enough for most peeps needs.

If the condition is A1 then you got yourself a bargain.

The Tab S2 was a different aspect ratio, more like Apple devices than usual Android...

Yep, that's why I wanted it. Much better aspect ratio for a tablet.
