PDA Sound Quality - Any Good?

I have an plan for a combined sat nav and MP3 player for my car and the obvious solution is a PDA. Can anyone offer any opinions on whether the sound quality is up to much? Are some better than others etc?

I've been looking at the Dell X50v as it's got the bluetooth and 802.11b I'll need but It would be awful to pay for it only to find out the sound quality sucks.

Sound quality on most PDAs is fine if you use the headphones jack. Obviously the little tiny speaker is not much good for in car use. I have a Ipaq 1940 which I use with a standard set of Sony headphones. Sounds great.

That would have been a bit optimistic - the car has a phono jack somewhere in the console for plugging your ipod (or PDA) in.

AFAIK the X50v uses the same sound chip as the ipod.

How much is that gonna set you back? An old laptop might be a better buy, external keypad for winamp control, and if you fancy your skills with fibreglass you can even mod the screen into the dash somewhere.

I'd prefer to get the x30 as it's cheaper and the wifi is supposed to be better. How could I find out what sound chip it uses & what something like an ipod uses??

I did think about that, I decided the PDA routes was just easier & (potentially) neater as a combine MP3 & Sta Nav option.
