Best mobile phones currently available?

Wanting to upgrade my current Nokia 6230, had it for about 2 years, and wondered what is good out there. Been doing quite a bit of googling, but no joy.
My main requirements are:
1) That it actually works to make phone calls (may sound obvious, but when they dont it really pisses you off)
2) You can send and receive texts quite easily without a hundred presses of buttons to get to a menu
3) Hands free loudspeaker, for use in the car.

Although i am a gadget fan, i have found in practice the more gadget-y the phone, the less useable it is.
I have always been a fan of the traditional simple and easy Nokia menu system, but yesterday say a new N91 and thought it was waaay to complicated.

Big SonyEricsson fan here, easy to call and text. Contacts are also easy to use. Not sure about the loudspeaker for handsfree, but the K750 and W800 have a speaker for music so i assume you can use it for a kind of hands free. But then you get headphones with them anyway that could be used instead.

I've been around the blocks a bit on mobile phones, had Siemens, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Nokia.

I had a Sony Ericsson W800i recently, and although it was a nice looking phone, I found it didn't do much. It was an ok mp3 player, but not great.
I've now upgraded to a Nokia N80 and find it a lot better. It can just do so much more, it's a lot more fun to play with.

if your looking for slim, samsung and motorola are you choice, the current range is mostly sub 10mm.

wouldnt touch a motorla with a barge pole. The ones ive used seem to jsut fall apart or flake. samsung are ok though. Would still only go for nokia or Sony eric

Never had a problem with Motorola. I have had a few over the years and all have been awesome.

Having been a died in the wool Nokia fan for a long time, I went with Sony Ericsson for my current phone (W810i). I have to say, I love it and have no regrets whatsover. User interface is intuitive to use and I would rank it up there with Nokia.

best thing I would suggest is to go to a shop and try them out. Go with the one which you find easiest to use without resorting to a manual.

I've got a PocketPC Phone, does everything but making looking up contacts and making calls with one had is a hassle.

I'm also looking for a handset, don't really need all the mp3 and camera features, just want the easiest to use interface for dialing contacts with multiple numbers and editing entries in the address book and calendar.

edit :/ another vote for a SE above. I guess I'll so as you recommend and try one out at a shop.

I should be getting my Samsung D900 today. I've used phones from all the main manufacturers bar Samsung, so it will be interesting to see how it compares.

Just to 'top & tail' this thread, i've got a Sony Ericcson K750i, and it fits the bill for me. I've had to adjust to a non-nokia way of doing things, but i'm finding it just different, not worse.
Great screen, good battery, and i've downloaded (for free) a great Star Trek LCARS theme, so i'm happy

I've had the 6230 and the K750i, the k750 is better to use, but reliability is much worse - the joystick doesn't work well any more (common complaint), my camera turns on randomly (it thinks I've opened the camera shutter all the time), and I've only had it 9 months. Oh, and the K750i doesn't have external music control - you can 'minimise' the media player, but then you only have volume control, can't skip tracks with the mic like on the Nokias.

I'm looking at the N80 and K800i at the moment. The N80 is definitely my phone of choice for now. I would have taken the K800 more seriously except they changed the memory card format, so my 1GB Duo card is useless. If I'm going to buy a new memory card, the N80 has most of the K800's features, and it has stuff like Wifi for networking/internet.

I've currently got a Sony Ericsson w810i which I love. It has a good camera, great mp3 player and it came with a 512mb memory card. The only thing I'd like it to do that it doesn't is have profiles that expire at a set time so I don't have to remember to take it off silent in the morning. Although if you hold down the hash key for a second or two it turns silent mode on/off. I don't know if other phones do that as well. The other phone I'd recommend is the Sony Ericsson k800i. The camera is better than the w810i (3 megapixel + xenon flash as opposed to 2 for the w810i) but I've read the mp3 player isn't as good as the w810i. I also think the w810i looks a lot nicer and it is also smaller.

Depending on what it's to be used for, PocketPC might be the way to go.

The above point about the hassle with calls is exactly right - but on the other hand, regular email / internet when out and about via wifi / 3G is really useful, SMS is much easier with a mini qwerty keyboard, and a quick google for PocketSCUMM gives you full access to Monkey Island and others on the move!

Particularly relevant because the HTC Universal (O2 XDA Exec, Orange SPV 5000, 3 Qtek 9000 etc etc) is now available on most of the major networks (free with a sufficiently hefty contract).

I am currently waiting for my contract on Moto V3 Razr to expire (2 months to go). I've had very few problems with it - I think that's due to treating it gently tho!
A big prob was the mini usb charging socket seems to have worn so I have to tease the plug in order to get it to charge.

I really like my Moto MPX200 - a bit chunky maybe, but great functionality.
I'm after another Smartphone next time round, any recommendations?
