Vista and hard drive thrashing

I am pretty new to vista, and am dual booting with XP.

I am getting really excessive hard drive usage on vista - and with a raptor, its a bit on the loud side.

Any suggestions as what may be causing this in vista?

Its not just the raptor, it's all the drives, but the raptor is the loudest!

My RAID array went nuts for the first few days, but now it seems to have relaxed a lot. I think it's to do with Vista trying to index everything on all the drives, after a day or two it should calm down!

If you're using dreamscene with ultimate, then that constantly accesses the HDD. It's made mine much quieter by turning it off.

Reckon it's the indexing service. Leave it on for now - it should calm down, and the search facility is handy

lol....looks like it was the scheduled defrag that was set to take place at 0100hrs on wednesdays.........

defragging all the time is a very silly windowsism. i wish there were a way of making ntfs less stupid

I am having the same problem. I have tried turning off dreamscape but my hard drive is still aggressively thrashing most of the time, even when PC is idle. I am using a legit copy Vista Ultimate. I have turned off defragging etc but problem remains.

Any help with this would be appreciated as it is bloody loud, especially if I want to leave it on at night.

Try turning off defenders automatic scanning or if you have more than one drive tick the boxes for the drives you want it to scan. When I started it was spending all its time scanning my three drives.

as previously said... im pretty sure its down the the new indexing system which searches and scans every single file on all the harddrives so if you have lots on there it may take some time, but like other comments they will calm down once they are finished

It is yes.
Im running Ultimate and for the first few days the HD's were practically running constantly.

It seems to have settled down now so whatever the OS ws doing seems to be finished...

I was wondering what was going on with the excessive HD access!
It can get a bit annoying with 4 Raptors but as said it has calmed down now

Having the same thing on my new laptop, vista premium. So it's nothing to worry about? Only had the laptop 2 days atm.

Honestly.. leave vista to do its thing... usually indexing, but once its done its fine
