Internet explorer and msn

Hello everyone,

Im running windows vista at uni and im having some problems. Everything was fine till the other day when internet explorer began to refuse access to the university network.

When i connect to the network, usually a screen comes up and asks me to put my username and password in, however internet explorer will not show the page up. This doesnt affect my connection to the internet i can still access via firefox but its preventing MSN to connect which is rather frustrating.
Any ideas?

You've not disabled your uni's proxy settings or something similar in IE have you?.

Nope i think its something to do with it being intranet rather than internet. It seems ot be working again now but i reckon it will go back when i restart

Talk to the Uni admins, that's their job, they setup the network and know how it works (or doesn't at times).

Here at durham (and at many other of my friends uni) they have similar problems MSN will still randomly disconnect no matter what you do. But it is all about the proxy settings.

For instance here at durham you need the script (for proxies) as:
wwwdur.ac.uk/Admin/proxy.config port 8080

Depends where you are, you need to contact your IT helpline and they should be able to help you out, no matter how useless they are.

we dont use any proxy or scripting, we just wire in and it works off standard settings. Its definately something on my machine... iv changed some kind of setting (something to do with switching between intranet/internet settings) I saw a message saying something like that but stupidly ignored it. Now BF2142 isnt working either so the priority has risen considerably

Just remind that im on vista. The switchover was recently and it seems there are far more things to get used to still

I didn't have any problems with networking vista when I tried out the RC, although I did manually allocate the IP/DNS/GW details. Just make sure you don't have proxy ticked for anything.

Hmmm internet explorer is running ok now but msn is still being wierd

No the majority of the time at uni you didnt need to mess with any settings, but for programs such as msn and skype you needed to put in the settings otherwise they would refuse to work or be worse than normal.

The only thing I can advise you to use if your really need msn, is try an alternative such as trillian but also remember you can use web messengers such as e-buddy which allows you to get into msn

I'm suprised you're able to play online games, most universities I know have clamped down on everything except for web browsing.

Well thing is everything used to work fine, and does work fine from my xp hard drive.

Now the only thing that doesnt work is msn although internet explorer does take a while to sort itself out.

I have been using online messenger which is ok. Just frustrating that i cant figure this out.
