Been thinking of putting my GPU to work, but not sure how that would effect the life span of my card.

Finally got my eBay-scrounged folder running. Old Dell Precision T5500 with a GTX 660TI for good measure.
The Xeon X5560 CPU has been happily running at 10k ppd for a while now but having NVS and GTX cards in at the same time had kyboshed GPU folding. A little trial and error with the folding client slot configuration has sorted that now so hopefully she might squeek up to 30k ppd total

Well that was shortlived!
The T5500 became a test-bed for my dearest's latest video project and although it isn't quite as fast the i5 it's now become a gaming/recording rig instead.
All in she was rocking 300k ppw for a £300 outlay with no funky hardware shenaniggans. Now it's 45-50fps in Minecraft with fraps running
So I've kicked my work CPU back to 100% and wait for the next funds to allow another shot at folding nirvana.

Hi all+.
going to try this folding buisness however i have a few questions.
1. how will this affect my CPU / GPU? will the life of them be reduced.
2. how much extra power will my rig use.
3. how do i join the hexus group for F@H - sorted this one myself.

Hi deejay great to have you on-board!
Hardware lifespan is somewhat subjective and as to whether you use the CPU or GPU depends heavily on your kit. I'm a conservative folder so reliability > max speed for me.
If I'm going to GPU fold I always opt for a card with a custom cooler. A pre-overclocked card is fine so I don't have to start tweaking and worrying about self-induced reliability problems.
I don't permanently GPU fold because the cards generate too much heat for long-term running at home.
Modern NVidia GPU's have been the most efficient folders in terms of cost/points per day (ppd). My GTX660 TI's are easily my best folders netting 30k ppd at peak and around 28k average.
At present I almost exclusively CPU fold.
My work Xeon X5355 has been folding pretty much non stop for years. Being a server part it's designed for this sort of workload and is yet to falter. I bought a s/hand T5500 for exactly that reason and would be running it as well if I hadn't moved it home (cost & it's noisy!)
I have been folding with a stock clock i5 4670 since Christmas. Even with a stock HSF it's quiet and can be happily run in a spare room with moderate ventilation. I would use a sealed water cooler (e.g. Corsair H-series) for full piece of mind if my case would take it though it's probably just paranoia.
In terms of ppd: X5355 - 4k; X5560 - 10k; i5 4670 - 11k;
Generally CPU's have been designed to work harder for longer than GPU's. They don't have anything like the ppd output but even with moderate cooling should be a safer long-term bet.
Sadly I cannot tell you how power efficient my folding setups are. However having seen published power-draw figures for stock vs overclocked hardware (CPU and GPU) I'll not being using OC'd hardware if I'm paying the bills!

Thanks for the tips.
I have decided to stick with CPU folding just now. See how I get on with it. I have direct cu2 cooler on my 7850 but when I done some gpu folding to start with, my care got really hot and it's not in the best area just now due to pending house move.
Maybe at my new home I can get a better location for my rig.
199 points so far. It's a start.
So as the summer kicked in literal folding @ home took a back seat as we've currently got too many people and PC's in the same room with no air-con.
Fortunately the time has come for a new work PC which I rapidly setup this evening and have it running in with a little F@H lovin'. Fingers crossed all is well and it can settle back into a laid-back life servicing my every IT need and folding like there's no tomorrow!

Absolument superbe ! Je veux le même !
Ok they said :-
Absolutely superb! I want the same!
Or it could have been
I am a quarter of the way to free shipping
lol

Lol fair enough

Redlight 0. I am getting the hump here.
Sorry to see how Hexus' folding team has dropped down the rankings I keep dabbling with coming back (if you'd have me that is! ) but I'm focussing on my Biz-tech account at the moment.
IS that right ? Only 6 active folders now?
Join the HEXUS Folding @ home team
still dabbling, but very difficult without dedicated high end hardware!
