It does one massive one. Short deadlines, though, so it needs to be on nearly 24/7
You should be able to accept jobs without deadlines if you prefer though.

The SMP version installed ok for me, but it hasn't managed to set itself up to run automatically on logon, so I'm having to run it manually. I've managed to get up to 57% so far!

Yes. It takes at least a frame for it to calculate a proper estimate of how long it's going to take for the WU, so it displays something completely out for a while. And sometimes, they just are that big (if you allowed big jobs).

I just went Dual Core A64 but the Radeon X1900 seems to turn it in fast enuogh to outstrip my CPU.
