The thing is, I have an E6600 and an 8800GTX and 2gig of good RAM etc. So my hardware should be plenty good enough to deal with the improved OS. But no matter what the hardware is, it seems games will run slower no matter what. It may only be 10fps, but still, that seems like an issue to me. The games I can run at 90+ fps are not a problem. But there are some games that struggle to run already.. So moving to Vista could make them unplayable unless I lowered the graphics settings even further. And doing that on this kind of hardware would be kind of heart breaking.

I also think that, bearing in mind how much money I've spent on Creative's stupid hardware over the years, if I moved to Vista and than had problems with the drivers... I would be tempted to hunt down and strangle, the managers of Creative. Vista has been out for ages, and before that, it had been in open beta for over a year. And these X-Fi's are expensive things. So if they are too lazy or just too incompetent to get a fully functioning driver, it would just annoy me too much.

I am assuming when some of these big games, with DX10, release in the next year or so, that more people will move to Vista to play them. So I'm guessing things will be more stable by then.

    Bizareness!

I think some updates must have installed last night or this morning, and vista appears to have had a proper kick up the arse, the lag has gone in windows mail, and so has the high CPU..not tried media player yet. Seems pretty nippy now overall, but the search is still rubbish.

Edit: I take all of the above back (apart from the last sentence), no idea what happened, but after a reboot, its back to its slug like self.

The OS has a bigger overhead in general, we covered that. XP had a bigger overhead than 2k, and I daresay that 2k had a bigger overhead than NT4.

It's the price of progress, at least with an OS like Windows.

The shoddy state of Creative's drivers has been well documented for some time, but at least you're not blaming Microsoft for them

    Here's hoping, eh?

That would be a fricken catastrophe. I really doubt that would happen though.

I like the idea of a service pack, and I reckon will they will get that out as soon as possible. That modular idea might work fine though too. They could just release a security module for example, so it just patches all the security bits. Then they could add a performance module which tweaks the CPU and memory usage and stuff. Etc. So that would work.

But yeah, whatever they do.. it better be snappy. 2009 or even 2008 would be a massive failure. I really cant see that happening though. So much is invested in Vista when you think of all the massive budget games due, later this year. If they where jeapardised because of MS's slow arse-ness, I can imagine lawsuits flying all over the place. So even if theres not a full on service pack, I can imagine there will be plenty of good patches in time for these big games. (Crysis, Alan Wake, UT2k7, etc).

i would wait until summer 2008 or the run up to xmas 2008 before switching from XP. vista still has a long way to go before its really is ready for sale . microsoft had to get it out of the door however unfinished. so you are just paying microsoft to be a beta tester at this point in time.

Yup, There was an OS level issue but it was patched not too long back.

Now its just down to improving the drivers
