    Winxp or Vista ?

Im getting a new computer in some days, and wondering if I am gonna buy vista or xp..

All my friends are beeing real microsoft haters atm and telling me to not buy vista at all, because of bugs and errors and all that. But I really want dx10 for when AoC is coming. But is dx10 worth it ? Or when is dx10 coming to xp ?

You might aswell get Vista. If you buy a new pc it will probably be installed already. If you build your own i would say go the Vista route.

If you want pretty solid and reliable, get XP, if you want buggy, slow and unreliable with poor driver support, and hit and miss performance, get vista.

With all the patches coming out Vista should be more reliable, but atm I'd recommend XP. I've tried Vista and quickly reverted.

If you do go down the Vista route make sure all the hardware has stable drivers and any software that is critical to you works on Vista.

I've been using Vista x64 Ultimate on my main rig for about 3-4 weeks now and I'm finding it great. I mainly use the pc for video editing/encoding, burning dvds & browsing the net. All the programs I use work fine.

It's been rock solid, no driver problems and no crashes. I'm also using the Sleep mode (standby S3) so turning the pc off and on is pretty much instant.

As long as Firefox & Thunderbird work perfect I'm happy

I've had a lot of issues with Vista (more than most as I use a fair few of non main stream programs) and won't be trying it again until at least the first service pack.

It really does matter on what you plan to do with it. If you get hit by the 'file speed' bug (very slow speed when accessing files) or the AVI corruption bug (vista has a habit of corrupting them on some systems), you really are in for a world of hurt.

See http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=114521 for the list of fixes that are due soon. That should help things a fair bit, but by how much only time will tell.

DX10 won't be coming to XP m8, Vista only tech that.
I'd go with vista, as stated before, buy hardware known to work ok. Ive used the 64bit ultimate version for a long time now, no real issues, some app problems and old games dont like it, but on the whole, if ur willing to give it a go, its already streets ahead of XP.

What i've found in using Vista is Games, more to the point PUNKBUSTER.
Even after i have done a Manual and an Auto Update, i was still getting Kicked, mainly problems with Call of Duty2, BattleField2. So i decided to go back to good old XP Media centre 2005 and alls well, steady ahead Midships, blow ballast, for christsake DIVE MAN DIVE!

And don't worry about not having DIRECTX10 in XP as now it's not all it's cracked upto be.
We were told by Microsoft that it was a GIANT leap foreward, haha, no it aint m8.

Do you always use admin mode for games like BF, I've found that punkbuster gives me problems without it on BF2142, and its generally ok for me then.

I just got a new laptop with Vista Business pre installed on it. Seems ok actually. A few things are a little annoying as they are different for no reason (in my opinion, but then i know what i'm doing).

I would have been annoyed, but the only app i use that i knew used to have problems with Vista was lightroom, but 1.1 copes with Vista 32bit.

What i want to see is complete compatability for 64bit now so i can get 4GB running in this thing

I run the games in question in compatible mode to run in earlier Os then Vista, the games run perfect in Vista, but it's PUNKBUSTER that gives me all the problems, every damn time.

I'm really miffed about it because i was going to buy the 64-bit Vista Ultimate OEM, there isn't any point until the new CALL OF DUTY 4 and MEDAL OF HONOR AIRBOURNE arrive, which should have the PunkBuster problem sorted.

Not used either - but as a general rule, being an early adopter can lead to problems. If there is a service pack release of Vista being released soon (as mentioned on other threads) then it might be worth waiting until after that relrease, which "should" fix the initial teething problems that some people have had.

Not necessarily - MS recently dropped the one item that technically would have made DX10 Vista-only (see DX10 is do-able on Windows XP) and there are a number of possibilities for providing DX10 capability to a broader audience (updates to OpenGL, XSOS, Falling Leaf's Alky Project).
