Which AV software for Windows 2003

    Hi all,

I was going to install the free AVG anti-virus software on a Windows 2003 box, until I realised that AVG don't allow this.

Could anyone recommend alternative free AV software that will run on a server platform?

If the supplier allows it, why not? It's non-commercial.

how often do you reckon there are instances of non-commercial use (which in AVland tends to mean home/personal, not non-business) of windows server 2003?

Re: Which AV software for Windows 2003

Probably not very often. I could explain why I have a 2003 box for personal use but it's kind of irrelevant.

If there are no suppliers of AV software that will allow this, then I won't use AV software. However if anyone knows of one I would be very grateful for the info.

clamwin is free, but has no on-access scanner (scheduled & email scanning only)

Without wishing to get into a debate (I really don't care what O/S you're using), you shouldn't be online using admin rights without AV. This day and age you're asking for trouble. I don't know of any free AV products for Windows 2003 though apart from Clamwin..

If your looking for a pay version, then NOD32 works. AVG6/7 also works if you modify the setup file with Orca.

I am surprised that NOD32 work with server, although AVG used to work out of the box on Win2k IIRC.

Why? If you can get NOD32 for such esoterica as Domino servers and BSD File Servers, then why not 2003 server? I thought that just required a sensibly written Win32 application, which is what you would expect from any decent Windows AV product these days.

It's not that, most AV companies try to ensure that you use a different product for servers so they can make more money. OFten though, it's the case that the TPM requirements of servers require a tuned version of AV.

    Aha. That makes sense.

I loves me some NOD32, I've paid for three licences for the house and one for my mum. The day I uninstalled Norton and switched to NOD32 was a happy day.
