    Vista 64 Bit Intall...Heads Up

Just thought i would point out a few things after re-installing Vista Ultimate 64 Bit.

    1. There has been alot of talk about Vista not re-installing correctly when you have more than 2gb of RAM installed.
I'm not sure if this is 'user specific' but i reinstalled last night with 4 x 1gb RAM in and all went well. Luck or not i don't know but it had no effect.

    2. ABIT Airpace Wifi - There has also been problems with this on Vista 64 bit due to driver signing. I made sure i had this driver on my pen drive and installed immediately after the chipset drivers. This now works great aswell.

    3. Make sure you have all the drivers on a pen drive before reinstall as it makes life ALOT easier.

    4. If you use Windows Mail then export all the settings BEFORE reinstall. Save them and import afterwards. (saves alot of hassle).

    5. If you have any mini images, make sure they are backed up aswell....save oodles of time when reinstalling your games and using Daemon Tools.

Sorry if this is 'teaching to suck eggs' but it helps me alot. From breaking my Raid array to being up and running was under 1hr 30mins.

    Yup, it is PC specific.
    The prerequisites are

    • The computer uses more than 3 GB of RAM.
    • The computer uses a storage system that is running the Storport miniport driver.
    • The computer uses a controller that uses 32-bit direct memory access (DMA).

I installed it with 4GiB, and it worked ok, but it took several attempts before it recognised the drivers that were on the USB stick.

You are using a Abit board which uses 64bit addressing for RAM.
A lot of people seem to be using ASUS boards and while I dont know about the recent ones, as a post from Ikonia over the last few days shows, they use 32bit addressing on the RAM (limiting it to 4GB INCLUDING motherboard I/O mappings) which is a _bad_ way of doing it. This happens even under a 64bit OS.

    Cheers ASUS

    Sorry
I put it in hardware as the issues seemed to be most RAM addressing and i thought thats where people may look first.

Interesting info on the ABIT vs ASUS boards aswell.
