Where is the "up" button in vista?

In vista, the main explorer window at the top, it has the back, and forward buttons as in xp, but the "up" button seems to be missing.. I love that button i use it all the time!! anyways.. is there any way to get it back? I tried to add icons to the menu but still no luck.

    I hate vista.

Hi p4ul, as far as I'm aware there is no up button. However, the address bar should show the folder structure and you should be able to click on any you want to be able to go back to. Not ideal but hope it helps.

Re: Where is the "up" button in vista?

I thought backspace was the same as the back button?

I dont want to go back, i want to go up! Its just usefull if say, i open a short cut to a folder somewhere then i want to go up one dir but the back button wont work because i came here through a short cut. Its just annoying things like that

Nice work bill.. you get your $$$ and take away the up button!

Re: Where is the "up" button in vista?

No up button doesn't really bother me, as I just click the address bar, better than the up button imo as you can go more than one folder up in 1 click.

The thing I do miss however is invert selection.

Use the bread crumb in the 'address' bar, it replaced the 'Up' button

That has to be the lamest Vista/Microsoft whine I have heard to date. I find the breadcrumb trail MUCH more convenient.

I think it was a bit more tongue in cheek over a whine

OSX uses a similar 'breadcrumb' method to Vista, but frankly I find the 'Up' button in XP to be far more convenient in most cases.

Re: Where is the "up" button in vista?

It has been banished by Billy Gates. And before you think "Ah, but I'll use the backspace key", that doesn't work now either. Backspace now goes back, not up.

The shortcut keys though are ALT+Left for back, ALT+Right for forward, and ALT+Up for up a level.

Re: Where is the "up" button in vista?

Possibly, but I didn't notice its behaviour until Vista Probably because Vista now has the folders on the left by default where XP didn't unless you told it to or launched it with the explorer flag.

I'm still a fan of Directory Opus 9 if I'm working with a lot with files though, its a lot more powerful and flexible. Or failing that, FreeCommander which is free

i preferred the up button also it was faster then sometimes having 2 use the drop down menu when you have longer folder names.

Re: Where is the "up" button in vista?

You don't need drop down menus, just click back on the breadcrumb trail, it's the same as websites, what's so hard about that?

Re: Where is the "up" button in vista?

Alot of this is just habbit though, as ive done it this way for years using xp, and i see no good reason for not allowing us to at least add it to the menu bar if we choose to. I hope they change this in one of the service packs, though i doubt they will.
