    Opera - Google.co.uk search?

Hi all. I'm using Opera 9.25 and I love being able to type "g search query" into the address bar. However Opera uses google.com for that. I'd like to be able to use google.co.uk. I've tried changing the search URL to google.co.uk but when I close Opera down and start it up again it's gone back to google.com.

I've tried adding another search from Google.co.uk but obviously I can't use "g" as that is already in use. I did once try editing the .ini file that contains the search URLs to use google.co.uk but that just broke Opera completely.

So is there a way to get Opera to use google.co.uk and not google.com? Thanks to anyone who has any suggestions.

    Re: Opera - Google.co.uk search?

Hmm so you can edit the original Google entry? What are you doing? Changing the .com part to .co.uk or adding a Google.co.uk search yourself and then copying the search URL over to the original Google search?

What I've done is make the original Google search work on "gg search entry" and then added a search from Google.co.uk using "g search entry".

    Re: Opera - Google.co.uk search?

I would imagine that he's just changing the .com to .co.uk in the search engine address as it works if I do that.

btw you know that you can add a search box to the address bar?
I prefer to use that than type "g etc."

    Re: Opera - Google.co.uk search?

The thing with changing the .com to .co.uk is it appears OK and to have worked. But if you shut Opera and re-open it and check the URL, I find it always reverts to .com again. I think this is because Opera is taking the search url from search.ini.

However I might have just found a loophole, the default search in Opera is "&Google" so adding another search from Google.co.uk and calling it "Google" seems to work. I can even have both using the keyword/letter "g". Strange or what.

I'll edit the search.ini string to .co.uk and see what that does.

    Re: Opera - Google.co.uk search?

All I've done is edited so that Yahoo is the preferred search. I just find it better than Google for the searches that I do. Then just put a 'New Home Page' icon on a toolbar and 'tis done.

Also, I have a choice of pages that give my preferences without using cookies. Please note that Google won't hold UK for a modified search but Yahoo will.
Here are the wibbles for 4 choices:

    Google Any Time

    Google Advanced Search

    Google One Year

    Google Advanced Search

    Yahoo Any Time

    Yahoo! Advanced Web Search

    Yahoo One Year

    Yahoo! Advanced Web Search

Yep that's exactly why I'm asking.

    Re: Opera - Google.co.uk search?

I have done that before peterb. It tends to break Opera for some weird reason.

Hmm - not had that problem myself with Windows or Linux versions. You need to ensure it is the search.ini that is in the specific user applications and settings folder. I'm not on a Windows machine at the moment so I can't look up the exact location for you - soz. However if you chose single profile at installation it will be in the general Opera folder - you must shut Opera down before editing the file.

    Happy New Year!

(Oh yes - probably teaching you to suck eggs but it does have to be edited in someting like notepad or other text editor)
