    Question 64bit and Games

Hi, I was thinking of putting 4gb RAM in my new rig so would probably mean getting 64bit Vista. How does 64bit work with games, I mean vista has enough problems as it is so will 64bit just create more hassle than its worth for getting the extra use out of the RAM.

The kind of games I play are:

    BF2142
    BF2
    Crysis
    BF3 When/If that comes out

    Re: 64bit and Games

Ive been running 64bit vista for a week now and I dont understand what the fuss is about, Ive been playing games no problems, even olders games seem to be running fine with me. No driver issues either, i think the problamatic 64bit days are a thing of the past now

I've had a couple of issues with games, but in all cases it's been permissions issues that can be sorted with a couple of tweaks.

Oh ok and does 4gb help with games rather than 2gb or even what is 8gb like because OC UK has a pretty good 8GB deal on right now!

    More memory certainly wont hurt.
I saw the 4x2gb OCZ memory on OCUK aswell. For £120 thats great value. Shame its at OCUK though...thats the only thing that is putting me off buying it tbh.

    Re: 64bit and Games

32-bit apps cannot use more than 2gib each. remember that first and foremost.

64-bit windows lacks a lot of legacy 16-bit support, which means (for example) many old windows games' installers will not run

Is anyone else getting bored of dupe threads? I mean seriously - this must have been covered in at lease a million other threads in the last 6 weeks.

As for the legacy 16 bit stuff you _could_ always install Microsoft Virtual Server or VMWare Server (both free, unless anything has changed of late) and game in a virtual machine if your XP/Whatever OS you're currently running license allows for it. Let's be honest - while there is a degree of slowdown when working and playing in virtual machines if it's something that you need a 16 bit subsystem for chances are that you'll not notice any difference.

a lot of the earlier win9x games (including dx titles) used a version of installshield which had a 16-bit stub

    Re: 64bit and Games

Thanks guys, I doubt I will probably use 8GB RAM or 16bit Installers etc. So i'll probs go with 64bit and Windows Home Premium. Can't see much point in getting Ultimate...

    Re: 64bit and Games

In the last month there has been more and more talk about 64 bit vista. Its seems
to me that 2008 will be the year 64 bit starts to take off properly.

Is having a few similar threads such a big deal....

So running a virtual machine with an OS that supports them would surely be the answer? Hospitals rarely treat infections with leeches these days either, is this such a bad thing?

Yes, because it's the same people answering them in the same way _every_ time. The answer doesn't change. The search function is there for a reason.

maybe. it'd be hit & miss. 3d in VMs only works with (paid) vmware workstation, and only with a 2k or xp virtual os

Why do you need to read the threads for? Is it some kind of obsessive compulsive
disorder, is it so hard to ignore them...

well... if the people who answer them every time ignore the threads then nobody gets help do they?

    Anyways, back on topic.
