I'm interested to know the sequence that causes this barrage of prompting and the necessity of doing it..
it's just a general issue with my workflow

let's say i download an app that comes as a zip. new folder in program filesUAC. rename the folderUAC. edit the config fileUAC. except not - if i forget to launch notepad as administrator, it doesn't prompt for elevation when saving. and then it turns out that the transparent remapping of writes to program files in vista has caused an issue, so time to locate the remapped version. except it's permission denied when trying to browse the depths of C:\Users. even when running an Administrator'd ExplorerUAC. then i go to update the icon on the desktopUAC

there's a workflow issue. i want to be the admin now plz kkthx.

Downloading the app/unzip/creating folder etc is basically the job of an installer - MS see programs files as installed data rather than live (we've converted our apps appropriately) - which would prompt a user once (potentially but as UAC detects installers..). The virtualisation is there to protect users from each other and more significantly as a stop gap to get your non-vista apps to work. Renaming an icon for your account on the desktop doesn't prompt, doing it for everybody does (sure cos you're potentially affecting other people). The thing is, you're one of many admins and none of which are analogous to the linux model - so if you really want to be an uber-power-user then it's msconfig and disable UAC in all honesty. You're stuffed in some circumstances anyway because ownership and permissions live outside UAC land anyway.

Maybe Vista is a stepping stone in terms of UAC/security. Perhaps they're taking baby steps towards a better model for Windows overall.
