    Tempted

To go back to XP, been on Vista64u for a few months now and I feel underwhelmed, Vista hasnt given me anything worth sticking with it for, XP on the otherhand will install all my games and play nicely without having to disable UAC, reboot, right click, run as administrator etc etc, its just a ballache, yeah its great for people that piss about with there PC's and break things but I've not broken my OS due to my messing around in years.
XP "Still" just works, Vista has to be tweaked and pissed about with to get it to do the things that XP does out of the box, yes Vista's got its good points but then again so has OSx/Ubuntu or anything else you might wanna install, yeah I know I'm gonna get the usual Pro-Vista fanboi's on here now but I tried it, I didnt like it and I'm tempted to ditch it, been there tried it, going back I reckon......

I'm sort of in the same boat Trig, I just don't see it being of any real world use to me atm. Get bugs in BF2 which I play mostly and am started to get anooyed at little things such as the UAC which is just an annoyance rather than something that is helping me out.

Thinking about trying XP64 out and seeing whether that's worthwhile, but I sort of doubt it as there is just not enough 64 bit software to really make the move any point.

Doesn't matter what the fanbois say, if you've tried something and decide you don't like it, and there's a viable alternative, then you change you can always change back later on if things improve.)

I wouldn't bother. Other than UAC (which most just stick in quiet mode and leave it there anyway) it has exactly the same pitfalls as Vista x64, which in my experience is limited to some aspects of some 32-bit codecs having to be moved (which takes all of 30 seconds). I wish DivX would pull their finger out. They'll never succeed in planting themselves firmly in the web-multimedia market if they can't even make an installer that can detect the platform it's trying to work with.

No tweaking necessary here. I do much more tweaking on XP systems than Vista ones, as I tend to disable services on XP, whereas in Vista disabling them has much less effect with it's much better allocation of resources, mainly RAM management.

Other than those codec issues (easily sorted by using FFDShow or if you do a lot of video editing, and it pains me to say this, a decent codec pack (never something I'd normally recommend, but they can be a pain in x64) Vista x64 just works here.

I am quite satisfied with Vista, but I quite agree there's very few reasons to make the switch. Whatever Vista does, XP does the same, or in some cases better. The UAC is useful, but only if you're not savvy enough online to spot the dangers in the first place.

My current line atm is get Vista64 if you're getting a mid to top end spec PC, otherwise get XP and definately stick with XP in the office. Vista won't be ready for business for 1-2 years at the earliest.

    Specs not an issue tbh.

Plenty of poke for Vista but I just think the OS should have user modes where you can tell the system how good you are instead of the OS second guessing everything you do...

True, but I'm guessing they couldn't think up a foolproof way to let users have limited overide of the UAC controls. I'm also a little puzzled as to why they ship it with the proper administrator disabled, once you enable that account and lock it down with a good password, it becomes a *lot* easier to manage as a standard user. Not to mention, every non-working program I've come across suddenly springs into life once you run it with elevated privilages.

All in all, I stand by what I said, if you've got a new PC (like the one you've got), it's worth perservering with Vista 64, but everyone else has no reason to use it, as XP is fine.

And herein lies what I feel is the flaw in your argument.

Basically you can run as "I'm a noob and haven't got a clue" or "Aha! I am master of the computing universe!"? Who's going to select the first one?

Sadly it's people who genuinely fall into the latter category who run as a limited user in their day to day business, andthe people who "think" they know all that end up with a rootkitted box because they run their browser as superuser. Stopping people running as a local admin for their day to day business was a *good* step to take. There are issues with applications that require the enhanced privileges but if the OS vendor won't take that first step to a more secure platform there's no incentive for any other devs to do so.

Yes, it's possible that UAC could have been implemented in a more friendly manner, but something like this needed doing.

Anyways, back on topic: if XP suits your needs better than Vista then use XP. I'm certainly not going to sell Vista to you, Microsoft pay people lots of money to do that for them.
