Also a quick note for those that may be "Linux shy" about making the jump to doing a full install, wubi makes things easier for the "non initiated". Basically you can install ubuntu within your windows drive so no need to modify partitions or use a new boot loader. Also once installed if you decide its not for you, it can be uninstalled from add/remove programs within windows just like any other app, and will uninstall cleanly like you never had it.

A friend of mine "Windows user only" saw me using ubuntu the other day and she was blown away by the functionality and how "pretty" it is. I recommended wubi for her install and now she is a Linux convert

No, it installs Ubuntu alongside Windows so if you want to use it you just reboot and select Ubuntu. There's no messing about with partitioning or anything, not even virtualisation and if you want to remove it you simply uninstall from within Windows.

Well, from my personal experience, autopartitioning is always sub-optimal, 2G for swap (or more if you're running silly heavy apps), 10G for root, and rest for /home is usually the best bet for 'desktop' installs, server installs obviously become non-trivial and partitioning needs vary between roles.

Yep agreed. Really hate some of the older servers at work i inherited with hardly any /opt space

But yes wubi is a nice introduction to the uninitiated in Linux. Long term if you like it, i would def go for a full install. When run with wubi you are not getting the full optimised disk performance you would gain compared to a full install.

That's where symlinks and mount -o bind comes in handy

Re: Which UNIX or Linux with Vista dual-boot?

if you already have vista installed is easy to just use easybcd to use the vista boot loader to load Ubuntu or whatever
since most people recommend Ubuntu you can use this specific guide
make sure you follow it step by step so you DO NOT WRITE GRUB TO THE MBR

Re: Which UNIX or Linux with Vista dual-boot?

Or do write grub to the mbr and be glad you don't have such a lousy bootloader anymore.
