unable to install my own XP on dell dimension

Every time i try and install my own version of windows xp onto my dell it gives me a BSOD.

When I use the original dell restore disk it is fine.

Strange thing is, I am able to install my own version of vista (and theirs) onto the pc.

One thing, the PC came with XP preinstalled and I had to apply for the free vista upgrade!

The Dell probably requires a specific driver integrated into the install for it to work. An incorrect miniport driver is a common cause of this (try and Install a mint XP64 install on a P965 for example).

Dell often use non standard parts that require their own drivers sadly

It's probably AHCI, Vista has drivers for it, XP does not.
