Need a bit of advice on SQL server

We have an in-house programming team who have started to setup a new bit of software for our company. They have requested a dedicated SQL server for use with Visual Studio.

    My questions are this...

What version of SQL would you advise?

Does anyone here use VMWare to virtualised an SQL server, if so have you any advice for me?

    thanks again guys and gals

well if its not for production systems , you should be able to use Developer Edition of SQL2005. They'll probably want ot run something like Team Foundation Server on it.

Yes I've virtualised quite a few SQL servers ( in production as well as dev ) , you have to be a little clever about how you plan it. Devs have a nasty habit of running stupid ammounts of databases and generally expecting they to run like greased lightening. ( mostly due to sloppy coding and complete lack of database design skill )

its a very good platform - especially once you combine it with some shared storage and virtual center.
