sharing canon i865 printer in network

Hi. i have a canon i865 printer attached via USB to my i7 vista 64bit vista. i am now trying to share my printer to my network but my win xp 32bit laptop fails to install the neccesary drivers in order for it to work on there.

my laptop can detect and see the printer and whenever i try to add it to the laptops printer page in control panel, it fails and says it has failed to find a suitable driver for it.

during the process from within this screen, it did ask me where to locat a .INF file for it and at first i diddnt have one but after a bit of googling, i managed to download the drivers for this printer. i then went back to this very same screen asking me where the INF file is and pointed to the newly downloaded driver and still it failed to locate a suitable driver according to the error.

is it because its operated now with vista drivers and therefore all pc's needing to be the same OS?

i've given up with my 64 bit and 32 bit network printer issue. I just swap USB leads now.

The way around it I found was to plug my printer straight into the router via Ethernet, then the drivers aren't tied into the OS version anywhere near as much!

my bebox doesnt have a usb port guess there is no way of sharing it on a vista machine

the best way would be to stick it on the 32-bit machine

If your printer doesn't have a USB connection use a print server like this

I was lucky that I bought a home office device with onboard network port, but the above will work quite nicely and if required, you don't even have to put your printer next to either of your PC's.

i have a NSLU2 device and was wondering if i can connect my printer to it and share it like that? do i need to install the drivers inside the nslu2?

you just reminded me how complicated installing and setting up stuff can be on a nslu2 device :S

sorry to bump this thread but has this issue been addressed somewhere in windows 7? i now have win 7 64bit os installed on my main pc and the 32bit installed on my htpc, so far no luck in sharing the printer!

I have my Canon printer networked between 7 64 and XP 32 fine. IIRC you have to install the other drivers on the machine that the printer is plugged in to. So in my case i installed the Win7 64 bit drivers, then set up the networking and then installed the drivers for the 32bit XP in the network printers dialogue on the Win7 64 machine.

Failing that... can you not open the printer control panel and go Properties>Sharing>Additional Drivers and install some x86 drivers too?

nope, tried that and said it cant find a suitable driver for the requested processor architecture!

edit: tried renaming the printer name from thje inf file and it seem to work!
