    Sis191 network card XP sp3

Came in this morning and a windows xp sp3 machine with an SiS191 network card had limited network access when trying to work via DHCP (doesnt work via static either). I've tried the various things listed below but cannot get it to work, can you think of anything else to try?

I've tried another PC using the same network cable and same network port and it works.
I've tried releasing the DHCP info
I've tried renewing the DHCP info
I've tried using a static IP address and it doesnt work.
I've tried uninstalling the ethernet driver and letting windows reinstall
I've tried uninstalling the ethernet driver and installing a new version the driver
I've made sure the DHCP client service is running
I've made sure the TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service is running
I went to do a system restore but it isnt active... yay.

There are currently no spare network cards so I may try buying one if need be, but before that. Can anyone think of anything else to try?

    Thanks
    -Chris

Is your DHCP server set to give IP addresses to any computer, or do you need to add the NIC MAC address to an 'allow' list?

What about forcing a link speed, not letting it autonegotiate?

Tried going through the windows networking wizard and making sure the workgroup is set correctly?

Re: Sis191 network card XP sp3

Thanks again Kal. I hadn't until this point thinking it was something to be done after the network connection is established, but just to make sure I have now checked it is the same and still nothing.

How about a "netsh interace ip reset" from a command prompt.
What ouput do you get when you do an "ipconfig /all"?

Thanks Viper, sorry that is something I tried but forgot to mention.

The output is along the lines of

    Mac address: whatever it is
    DHCP enabled: yes
    Authconfiguration: yes
    IP Address: microsoft auto address
    subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
    default gateway: [blank]

I've tried running from an ubuntu live CD and basically get the same, me thinks its a hardware issue.

Re: Sis191 network card XP sp3

Oops, a bit slow. Yep, that definitely seems hardware related, I usually keep a usb network adapter handy for times like this.

Ok, so when you statically assign an address and try and ping the gateway you just get a "request timed out"?
Can you paste in the output of an "ipconfig /all" with the static address assigned?
Is it connected to a managed switch that you have access to?
