Recommend me a PCI Wireless Network Card for use with a Linksys WRT54GL Please!

    Hi Guys,

My current nextwork/internet setup is Virgin Broadband connected to a Linksys WRT54GL which shares the internet to 4 computers using up all four of the RJ45 ports on the router. Now I'm thinking of freeing up one of the ports for use with a download and storage box I want to build for the loft, but that will mean one of the 4 computers connected will need to go wireless.

Now I've no experience what so ever with Wireless networks so I could use some advice on what PCI based Wireless network card to buy for use with the Linksys WRT54GL. Something cheap, reliable and simple to setup would be good. I've heard that Linksys cards are problematic but I've no idea if that's true. Any advice would be great, especially from WRT54GL owners!

    Thanks!

If said box is already connected via a wire why not buy an extremely cheep hub/switch? Wireless is a pain and if it can be avoided do so.

Otherwise any wireless-G card will do, I would recomend an USB one for the simple fact its easier to install.

I got the Edimax PCI wireless card. Works fine with a Netgear router, dumped the fancy software and just using windows wireless thingy.

A £10 switch would be better if you ever transfer more than 100meg at a time from the computer. Wireless has come on - but if I owned this house I'd drill holes and run cables at the drop of a hat.

I know as little or less than you about this, but the advice I see most often is to use a card with the same chipset or manufacturer as the router. Mixing different chipsets and manufacturers seems to (potentially) create no end of problems.

what you want to do it update the firmware of the WRT54GL to a 3dr party one that supports SpeedBooster/Afterburner.

and get a http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/63762 or similar to pair up for max speed possible with that router.

costs quite a bit more than a standard http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/45602 of course. which would be the best option to avoid unnecessary cost and faffing about
