Installing Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 first, without overwriting 2009 (as per Kasperky's instructions) did the trick. Thanks again for the prompt reply and advice.

    Re: kaspersky 2010

    I am glad it's worked

Whenever you upgrade KIS, DO uninstall the previous version first, even if upgrading to the latest build. Save the activation details (you get a prompt for that) and then fresh install of latest version.

Don't forget to save your current configuration as a backup (cfg file).

    Question Re: kaspersky 2010

Has anyone noticed a marked slow down in connection speed with KIS 2010 ?
I was going to get kis 2010 for my new win 7 rig, however i was put off doing so because in most of the reviews i read (especially user reviews) most stated that there was a marked impact on browser & down/up speeds. I instead opted for norton internet security 2010. However after testing nis 2010 for a few weeks on a friends pc, i am pretty certain that i won't be using that either now.
So im kinda stuck for a all-in-one av & fw security package to go on the new win 7 rig.

I really like the look of kis, it's game mode, the extras in the firewall, the low resource usage and the improved flexibility over norton. However i only have a 8mb connection, so i can't really afford to take a connection speed hit.

    no probs here....

I however had problems with KIS2009 (don't remember build id) but that was with Vista x64

So far so good build 736 with Win7 x64 in a desktop and wifi laptop

pardal, your using kis 2010 on win 7 x64, what's the safe run mode like ? is it able to run browsers in sandbox on a 64bit platform ? - i ask because kaspersky say on their site that this feature apparently works on 7 x64, but it "works with limitations".

Edit- just thought i'd add this in, pretty much what i was concerned about.
    Snail firefox
Initially appears as simple prob, but read through the entire thread and it's links, and you get a picture that this is reasonably widespread.

    Re: kaspersky 2010

I recently upgraded my netbook from XP + Kaspersky 2009 to Win7 + Kaspersky 2010. Obviously it's hard to compare because the OS upgrade is likely to have a far greater impact than the AV upgrade, but the overall speed doesn't seem much different.

Dave, even though it says "with limitations" I haven't had problems so far. I have few add-ons and run 5 or 6 VMs on my lab and browse with FF on host. All fine. Let me know if you want me to test something more specific.
    cheers

I'm new to KIS, have to say am very impressed with. It sits there and I don't even know it's running, does its own thing, doesn't bother me unless it's something nasty.

Cheers pardal, thx for the info. Knowing that firefox can be sandboxed on 7 x64 through the safe run mode, and that i works, is a big plus.

atm been scratching my head over this kis download speed issue. Been reading tons of post's & resource info, and it defiantly exists. However there actually doesn't seem to be any discernible reason why some people have download speed issues with kis, and others on similar settings, systems, and configurations, are not. I bet it's probably got the kis dev's doing the same lol. very weird problem.

Guess the only thing to do is just install it on the win 7 rig, and see what happens.
But then again, i've never been much of the gambolling type

Edit - Oh yea nearly forgot, since this has kind of become a thread about weather to go for kis as your security package or not. Just thought i'd include THIS
kaspersky seems to have one of the most extensive & clear and easy to understand help pages i've seen for a security package. Very Good.

Dave, if you don't want to install KIS on your machine, just creat a Win7 VM and do your testing first......If happy, then deploy to your host machine.
I haven't had any download issues with KIS2010 so far.
    cheers
