I personally have had no trouble with the Windows Update and Realtek devices...

Same here, almost every system I've built has had Realtek chipset-based NICs onboard and the in-box drivers or those supplied through Windows Update have never broken anything.
One time an AC'97 audio chipset driver update caused me to lose audio and involved a rollback, that's the only one I can think of.

There is defo a dodgy Realtek driver floating about on the Windows update site (or was), as I was hit by it too.

It wasn't a biggie - all you have to do is hit rollback in dev. manager, but it leaves you scratching your head for 5 mins

This was on a Abit QuadGT. It has probably been updated though now as this was about 7 months ago.

So far so good after the second windows update driver... Now if only they were labelled to show which one was which...

I guess I should get over my wariness for Realtek drivers over Windows Update. it was just a complete PITA when it killed my network connection until I worked out what was going on.
