    Windows 7 (Not Responding)

    Hey,

I installed windows 7 and it's pretty awesome except when it freezes from time to time. I'll describe what happens and some things I've tried:

So, I'll start to do something, then the window I'm working on will start not responding, this happens at exactly the same time the CPU usage will fall to 0-3%. Other windows still respond and can be used and my music will stop playing. This can happen at any time after turning on,and the computer doesn't restart after it, so I'm sure it's not heat. There doesn't seem to be any pattern in when it occurs...

    Things I've tried...

-A complete reformat - still get the same problem.
-Changed AV - This happens with both Kaspersky and MSE.

    Any suggestions?

    Re: Windows 7 (Not Responding)

This is a known bug in the WMP indexing code, certain media files which aren't completely compatable with Win7 codecs causes it to loop and gobble up system resources. Leaving your homegroup and removing the media directories from your Libraries should make the problem go away.

This still happens when using other media sources, such as Spotify and Youtube. It can also happen during games when I don't have any media players open.

    Re: Windows 7 (Not Responding)

WMP itself doesn't have to be open to trigger it, this is a background process.

You can get some more information on this problem with the following google search string: http://www.google.ie/#hl=en&q=window...a5476a0c1878d7

I have never heard of WMP indexing...ever. Google can't even find it. If you don't use WMP I don't think it's involved in the indexing of your files.

Repressor, knowing some details of what exactly you open besides "anything" will help. Did you have a previous OS on it? What hardware do you have? nVIDIA chipset? AMD/Intel CPU?

Microsoft calls it 'libraries', but indexing is indexing.

I can literally make anything (Not Respond) ( including calculator ), What causes it is likely to be a background process as it can happen no matter what I have open. This used to have XP on it and my specs are in the "My System" thing <<<<<< .

    Re: Windows 7 (Not Responding)

I fixed it! I had the same problem, all apps going not responding randomly for 10 seconds to a few minutes at a time. It would even happen just scrolling down a web page. I tried almost everything, then read this thread. I went to control panel - programs and features - turn windows features on or off - and unchecked all of "media features". Then Control Panel - Indexing Options - Advanced - Rebuild. After that I haven't had the problem at all! I'm glad I didn't format and reinstall. I already used Zoomplayer and Winamp for all my media needs anyways, who needs Windows Media Player's bloated crap.

ahhh, GRID paused for a few moments.

I don't think that Zazz's fix has worked for me .

Tried removing them from WMP libraries on my ole man's laptop, it still seemed to crap out. I read that doing that then reindexing Windows Search helps, but, meh, the whole thing is still rather silly.

    Re: Windows 7 (Not Responding)

I have a Not Responding thing happening too. Random is the word. Like copying files from one folder to another, open web browser = freeze. Streaming media to my xbox downstairs, show stops/connection to PC has been lost = PC has frozen. Looking at my games list in steam = freeze.

But it's the kind of freeze where you mouse you mouse and every 20 seconds it will move to a point, stay frozen, move, stay frozen.

It's a massive frustration. And I can't open Task Manager to check WTF is happening because it takes so long for anything to happen, because it's freezing.

I'm going to try Zazza's recommendation tonight. Will report back.

    Bloody 'puter.
