    Creating some vcd's

Right, got 2 * 1.2gig mpg files here and I wanna burn them to vcd or svcd format (pretty sure my dvd player supports both) as I have yet to aqquire the masterful piece of technological wizadry known as a dvd writer.

Now what i wanna know as I ain't done this before is, do i need to re-encode the files to .avi or similar? if i do will this bring the filesize down enough to fit a file on each disc? If not what program can i use to split the files and fit them on 4 discs?

Any help is greatly appreciated guys

If you got Nero with your drive, it should be able to do it to some degree. I don't think you'll be able to split it across 2 discs for each mpg, and you may have to pay for SVCD - but Nero handles all the conversion and menu making

It depends on the mpeg version and data rate whether you have to re-encode, but there is no need for avi at all

Check out the guides at www.afterdawn.com and www.doom9.org they have a step guide there with glossarys and FAQs

B4 i aqquired my DVD Rewriter, I used Virtual Dub to split the videos, and then encode them in separate parts, however i find fitting 120+ minutes on a Kvcd a lot easier

Yep you'll need to split them. Then you can just burn them straight as they won't need encoding

Not necessarily Howard. You'll only be able to burn them striaght into a VCD, SVCD or KVCD format if they conform to the correct standards. I.E. correct GOP structures, dimesnions, resolution and FPS. But having them as mpg files is a good place to start. Also he will not be able to burn them straight becuase they are 1.2 gig and he wants them both on a disk of their own.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

If it's an mpeg, and you put it through Nero, it'll have to do minimal encoding. Maybe a bit, but not usually. It'll just set it all up and burn it :|

I allways use an encoder called 'Canopus ProCoder' for all this kind of thing, then I can just set the mode in Nero and away it goes no processing needed on Neros part

Assuming they are in VCD / SVCD format, you should be able to split them to fit nicely on 2 CD's if you go that route.
