.OGM file extension ??

whats this ? mate sent me a file but its in this format

apprently its a video, but it wont play, i think it may be an ogg sort of video, like what a mp3 is to a mpeg2, an ogg to a ogm?

anyway, any idea how i can convert it to a compatible format ? mpeg 1/2 avi any is good

It's Sony's extension for converting tracks onto the MiniDisc.

You'll need something like SonicStage (the software you get with a Net MiniDisc player) to listen to them.

Am sure there's other pieces of software which'll change 'em though.

Allen: you are thinking of .OMG (Open MG) not .OGM (OGg Media).
Swafeman: its a media format that supports multiple audio channels and subtitles. I've found VLC to be the best player for it and many formats: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

OGM is also the unofficial extension for an Ogg Vorbis Compressed Video File, probably generated by DivX or Xvid encoder outputting to OGG format. So if you have the appropriate codec pack you should be able to open it. Try http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...k_All_in_1.htm

almost, but not quite. Ogg is a container format, like AVI, MOV or ASF (Windows Media). Vorbis is an audio codec which (more often than not) is put inside an Ogg file. OGM seems to have been adopted as the method for storing video in Ogg form, as opposed to Ogg Vorbis music files - but there's no restriction on what codecs the OGM has to use.

Whilst the "correct" system is to use Vorbis sound and Theora video (both codecs from xiph.org, the people behind the ogg format), more often than not XViD video is used - and you could use any audio format, such as AC3 or MP3, if you wanted.

I _THINK_ (but don't hold me to this) that recent versions of VirtualDub can open Ogg files (and you can save into an AVI file, directly copying the audio & video codec streams). Technically though Ogg is a great format, supporting everything a DVD would (multiple angles, audio tracks, subtitles).

yup, i wudnt mind putting the vid onto dvd tho, for said reasons, but i dont see a way of doing OGM -> DVD, so was gonna OGM -> AVI -> DVD, hoping that would be easier than sourcing a codec to do it for me

well if you do a direct stream copy (again, assuming virtualdub can open the file), then converting should take literally three minutes.

apprently its DIVX5 and OGG

downloaded the OGG codec for nero...already got a DIVX codec for it, but still wont convert...with any program

Get virtualdubmod, that can open ogm, converting to avi will make the file a bit bigger (avi has larger overheads) and you may loose some stuff as ogm can support chapter information, and multiple soundtracks etc.
The best solution would be to get the ogg dshow filter from doom9 and play it back in your regular media player the same as any other video.
