Media Player 10 / CDeX + Others Ripping

after having a complain at a friend of mine (who is a much more experienced windows user) about not being able to rip about 6 CD's in my music collection using CDeX he suggested I tried Windows Media Player 10. I scoffed in his face that windows would be able to rip copy projected CD's - know how MS love to project their own work I would be surprised if they endorced the ripping of others.

I was therefore shocked when it happily ripped the troublesome CD's

What I'm trying to understand is how does MS rip the CD's when CDeX can't, they both have access to the same codecs ? etc etc.

    Can anyone explain this

    Thanks

cdex is gona be the best proggie to rip stuff, i cant see how anyone would suggest using wmp over cdex :| lame is gona be the best mp3 codec, unless you fancy using something a bit less lossless, but that would likely entail using a non-mp3 format (ogg, random one i forget)

they will both have access to the same codecs, didnt know it ripped to mp3 though?

not sure exactly why cdex wouldnt do it? was it due to protections or just not working?:s
er, if your northbridge fan is humming loudly, disconnect it. _dont_ kick the side of the case, it _will_ break it.
    i know :/

I appriciate cdex is the better ripper, but CDex wouldn't rip around 6 of my CD's due to protection.

The question was, howcome cdex can't rip them yet wmp can - they both have access to the same system codecs/files

the WMA files made by WMP will be coated in a crustly layer of DRM - friends will be unable to use them, for example. CDex rips using any one of the codecs it comes supplied with, but doesn't do the microsoftian thing of obtaining licenses from the record label & encrypting the output with your current windows install's unique identifier.

directhex, that was the response I was looking for

If I was to use wmp to rip to output mp3 format would this still put an overhead in the files

I thought if you go into "Tools / Options / Rip Music" and uncheck the "Copy protect music" that it doesn't put any DRM into the output files?

I just ripped a CD to lossless WMA, didn't let Media Player connect to the Internet at any point, copied the files to my second PC and played them there without problem... I tried it using Winamp too.

Admittedly it's not one of the CDs with any kind of bizarre protection scheme on it, but I thought that buggered up playback more than ripping anyway?
    *shrug*

I suggest you try playing the output files on another PC, ikonia, and see if they have a "crusty layer of DRM" and refuse to play - and see if you can rip without the "copy protect music" option set if it does.

No idea where the idea of contacting the record label to obtain a licence came from when ripping CDs - isn't that to do with downloading music content from those online stores and getting a DRM'd version of the file from them?

I was pleasantly surprised by WMP10. It rips my CDs to WMA or MP3 significantly faster than CDex or dbPowerAmp.

No problem playing them on my iRiver either.

    cheers,
    dave
