there are over 500 linux distributions for assorted uses publically available
of note, redhat is no longer one of them - red hat enterprise is more than anyone here can afford, and fedora core is like redhat, but less stable
going by the distrowatch.com rankings, gentoo, ubuntu, slackware, and debian are all in the top 10 - and if you could 'based on' distributions, debian demolishes the competition
the different distributions have different things to offer. personally i run debian because it's easy to administer and install extra software onto. some people run gentoo because they think it makes them clever.
i hope the hexus linux community isn't big enough for this to turn into a giant flame war
haha flame war, be good to see massive discussion over linux tho
PS do you run game like cs:s on your system? as in another thread they wwere showing a linux distro that could play doom3,HL2 etc and I was wondering what distro that was, either that or it was a addon for a linux distro.
cheers
I have only used Redhat/Fedora and Suse...I like redhat although SUSE has an IMPRESSIVE GUI (looks better than XP) quite user friendly too. Im planning to install mandrake some day but well see how that goes.
opps wasn't aware it was linux game... i know ut2004 is thoOriginally Posted by directhex
what other games can run that aern't linux based? like HL2 can that and the rest of the steam 'suite' as it were all run using this proggy?
I run my own distro called "peel" which I'm looking for people to join in and develop with me, but I would agree with directhex that Debian appears to be the leading distro overall as it is production usable, there are test versions for show offs, its easy to update, package managment etc etc.
Suse appears to be an ok home system but few are in production now, unlike the earlier days
I personally stay clear of redhat/fedora some of my customers use Redhat AS and I find it dumbed down, and very propritary, in someways is quite awkward to support and develop for. If more people had the balls to say no to the purse owners in companys and explain why redhat is a bad idea for their business a major linux player would be forced back into the arena.
gentoo is a fine system, and for development can be very useful, however the init system within sucks and requires hacking to get a more generic build, and again as hex said more people run it because they think its "cool" when there is northing clever about typing "emerge"
I've filled with MANY distro's in my time and used them in many different ways, however there is no "best" distro its down to personal taste and what you need it for. I'll be honest the question of "whats the best distro" normally annoys me, however this thread is quite a good one, and there should be on need for flame wars
It is Inevitable.....
http://digital-conquest.ath.cx/wiki has info, though it's not comprehensive, on cedega, what it will run, and how well.
Nah, m8. It's my huge brainpower that both makes me clever AND run Gentoo!!Originally Posted by directhex
