XP Icon selection with file types

    hi all,

I have a simple question which appears to be quite vexing.

I have just associated .mp3 files with "winamp" eg: use winamp to open them.
I did this using the folder options ---> file types tab

Next to mp3 files in this list I have the winamp icon.

yes in the folders eg: c:\music\album all the mp3 files have windows media player icons to represent them, yet the playlist has the winamp icon.

How do I / why are they not all changed to be winamp icons.

more to the point how do I choose a custom icon for say mp3 files.

This functionality appears to have changed a little.

    thanks.

    All,

I've still found a solution to this.

Is this common behaviour ? or have I missed the point of how to change icons in XP.
Microsoft documentation seems to suggest it should change with the associated application being changed, but for me it does not, nor does this answer how to set a custom icons for file types.

first, flush your icon cache (install tweakui, repair section, rebuild icon cache). if that doesn't help, then it's a massive irritation with the way xp handles filetypes. you can sometimes adjust things via tools, folder options, filetypes, but this pollutes the registry into storing the old settings as well.

    easy way out? not sure.
