the ntoskrnl file has to be replaced in safemode

Ah, right, my apols.

First I'd try actually deleting the affected kernel file, ntoskrnl.exe.

Then try "expand D:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ C:\winnt\system32\ntoskrnl.exe"

pc might not even run if i do that?? is it safe? I am goona backup data 2morrow so don't want to do anything that will make data recovery impossible.

Do your backup FIRST, then do it, but make sure the kernel is from the right service pack, OK?

you get the recovery console from there. it's not msdos, though it behaves a bit like command.com
