Installation is easy, not as simple and quick as PCLinux but far simpler than debian sarge.
Gnome is the default window manager but KDE 3.4 is easy to install.
Networking as usual is simple and i was browsing th network in a couple of minutes, the screenshot above is from about 5 minutes after installation.
Looks ok so far, not as many bundled apps as PClinux but all the basics are there, open office, firefox, several IRC and chat clients, Evolution for your emails although I have just installed thunderbird as i prefer it.
Install took roughly 30mins which is pretty decent considering the specs of the machine with a duron 1800 and a fairly ancient WD 80gb hard drive.

I tried kubuntu (I'm a KDE devotee) and seems not bad, though very slow - not sure if that is because the vmware 5 demo is slower than version 4 or kubuntu is slow... At least it recongnised my Audigy, which mandrake 10.1 couldn't.
I really really don't like sudo though. Used to more traditional root login which is easier if you want o do several things in a row. I could hack it back though pretty easy with sudo passwd so not a disaster.
Impressed by apt-get - easier and more reliable than rpms in my view. However I'd like a sligthly bloatier install by default - there were too many basic tools missing by default and I ended up doing huge library downloads to get things running.
OMG, there is a search button....

What are KDE & gnome. How can you install one on top of the other?
KDE vs gnome - I don't know the 'correct' answer technically, but lthey're basically a bit like different Windows themes but with a different set of utilitites for doing some of the basic tasks like text editing, calendar, file management etc You'll get different icons, different window types, slightly different default applications and so on depending which you choose. You can mix and match a little but my experience of trying to run both has been less than stellar. My personal very simplistic analysis of them is that gnome looks better but is flakey as hell and not as useful for actually doing stuff.
You can install both KDE and Gnome. Along with those, I also have IceWM and XFCE installed, but only for testing purposes. The only one I really use (and am using to type this message) is Gnome. I prefered the look, and I found Konquerer quite annoying at times.
You may as well just install both and see which you prefer.

"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."
How can you switch between them?
