Slow Internet Access on Debian Using Kernel 2.6

I have absolutely no idea why this problem is occuring, so perhaps you knowledgeable chaps can help!

When accessing the internet on Debian (Sarge or Etch), it takes a long time for web pages to load - far longer than it should be taking. However, download speeds are fine. This is when using Kernel 2.6.8-2-k7. Using Kernel 2.6.11-1-k7 doesn't help. For some reason, the problem does not appear when using Kernel 2.4 - I have tested this on two computers, and get the same problem. I made sure of this problem on one computer by reinstalling Sarge and just installing X, Gnome, the latest kernel, and Firefox.

Any ideas? Has anybody else come across the same problem?

    Thanks

    Mike

Sounds like you're using NTL DNS servers.

On my windows box I was getting 750ms ping from google, that was from the NTL DNS.

Chnaged to the virgin one, 59ms.

i've had the same connecting wirelessly through an apple airport extreme base station, and it was DNS-related there too.

add some reasonable dns servers (e.g. pipex) to the start of /etc/resolv.conf, see if that fixes it

I've tried to change the file, but it keeps reverting back to what it was before.

After a bit more research, the problem is apparently something to do with ipv6 - it needs to be disabled. Anybody know how to do that?

Edit: In about:config in Mozilla Firefox, I changed network.dns.disableIPV6 to true, and now Firefox can browse normally. Of course, this only affects Firefox, so I would still appreciate any advice on how to solve this problem for all programs.

    Thanks

    Mike

Goto the properties of the network device.

I know on fedora it was just a simple tick box next to the IP config for IPv4

    create /etc/modprobe.conf

    Then insert the lines:

    alias ipv6 off

    then reboot
