Or maybe he's writing a report he wants to look at on a regular basis which means a saved SQL statement will be useful. Or maybe he's just trying to increase his knowledge of SQL.

Indeed - for 3 reasons i wanted to know how and why it works.
1) it needs to be in a PHP script, meaning i cant look at the database and give the user the info required myself.
2) it needs to be in my project report
3) i want to learn SQL better
We all have to start somwhere - unfortunatly for me i didnt know it didnt support sub-selects
