    Rip From a DVD

Hi, Iv'e asked this question before on Usenet, but I can't get a simple/straight answer from anyone. Is it really that complicated to Rip a couple of episodes off a DVD which I have?

I know it's cliché but it is purely for 'backup' puposes, as I own the DVD anyway. Just want my Alan Partridge episodes more accessible!!

    How can this be done?

    Thanks!!
    Martin

I use dvdshrink to rip, then burn using nero. Once you have ripped you can play them, or change them in to divx or something else.

    guide here

Theres some guides on doing divx on there as well.

I not really sure that we are allowed to talk about this here or not, yet oddly ripping CD's too MP3 is ok, so the mods might remove it. The goal posts seem to be moving all the time, but some have been allowed to pass recently, so here goes...

Look for and download a free proram called DVD43. Run this and it will sit in the system tray. You can then use Divx (Or a format you would prefer, like an Xbox360 supporting one etc) to encode the episodes direct from the DVD without having to use DVD shrink or anything like that.

Short answer: Yes, especially if you want to re-encode them.

Long answer: Take yourself over too doom9.org and you'll find all the information you could ever want.

DVD Decriptor set to IFO mode (the default i think) then select the right PGC and away you go. I then use AutoGK to transcode.

I did not mean ripping MP3's was legal, just that it seems perfectly acceptable to discus Audio CD ripping, yet ripping DVD's (for use on PMP's, Xbox360, etc) is frowned upon. But we have done this topic to death already I guess.

I thought there was a latter ammendment to that law to address digital rights, where liscencees of digital copywritten material were allowed to make a backup of media for the purposes of media security.. Which is why you can copy a music CD onto an MP3 player. I'm not sure about DVDs though, since they are 'encrypted', I know in the U.S. thanks to the DCMA laws it's illegal to breach any kind of cryptography (even thought the federal government does that daily). How does British law stand on this?

It's all a load of cods whollop if you ask me, the government is legitimising the entertainment industry ripping off the public, RCSS should be made illegal for price fixing.

common misconception, with no real basis - there is provision for backing up of software - but it has to be 1:1, and does not apply to music or video

Which is why you can copy a music CD onto an MP3 player.
the case always has been that you can only do it with explicit written permission from the copyright holder - it's largely decriminalised, but it IS the law. see also: forced daily christian prayer in schools

I'm not sure about DVDs though, since they are 'encrypted', I know in the U.S. thanks to the DCMA laws it's illegal to breach any kind of cryptography (even thought the federal government does that daily). How does British law stand on this?
transcoding is illegal without written permission. go to the store, grab the box for some dvd ripping software like dvd->psp or whatever they call that kind of thing - there'll be a long message about a) how it can't do encrypted discs and b) you're only allowed to do it to recordings you have the copyright holder's consent for.

In many cases we own the orginal anyway, so as far as we're concearned, it's not a problem

Sony : "Do not break copyright law, or we will nail you. And your kids. And dog your too. Ripping CD's and DVD's is evil pure evil and a for every disk you rip, somewhere in the world a fairy will die, mmkay"

Punter : "But i'm thinking of buying a Sony MP3 or PSP if i can play my music and movies on it..."

Sony : "OH, well, erm, *cough* if you put it like that, i guess thats fine then, er yeah"

Does anyone really care? It depends if there is a big fat $ involved.
