    Best free firewall and antivirus software?

    I'm looking to try and replace McAfee firewall and antivirus, as I'm looking to find a replacement that's lean and mean.
    I've used Norton and Zonealarm before, but found that they sucked too many resources for my liking.
    Any recommendations?

    Does it have to be free? NOD32 Sounds perfect if you are willing to pay for it...

    Otherwise AVG? I'm sure thats still free and Windows Firewall is bundled with windows, works well aslong as you are also behind a NAT Router

    It doesn't have to be free, so I'll give NOD a go
    Also, is the windows firewall that secure, or is it best to use another one instead?

    Sygate Personal Firewall used to be good until Symantec bought Sygate out (bah!) and then removed it from the site.

    I am sure you could find it on the 'net somewhere though.
    I see, said the blind man to his deaf wife as he stuck his wooden leg out of the door to feel if it was raining.

    most firewalls are secure, its how you administrate them that counts.
    It is Inevitable.....

    i use nod32 and have no probs with it at all, a zillion times better than that bloated warthog of an excuse of a piece of software called norton that causes more probs than it fixes. as for a firewall, why not just use a router with an in built one? and just use windows firewall to stop the extra bit of paranoia

    I use either AVG Free or Avast! Free Edition, along with the Windows Firewall.

    Simple.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    im gonna pitch a vote for kaspersky, you can pick up the 'internet security pack' for just over a tenner, admitidly its the oem version, but who really wants a box!

    Talking

    Kapersky is a fine antivirus proggy - you want it for free?

    google search "aol kapersky" - yup the free download (not trial) of 'anti-virus shield' is our old friend 'Kapersky'.

    You might like to look at 'Spyware Terminator', which can optionally download / use Clam antivirus as well.

    'Comodo' have freebies of firewall, antivirus, antispam etc

    I stay away from Norton & Bullguard/Bitdefender, but thats my choice.

    Yep Nod32 is a nice proggy, not so well known by the public, but engineers usually do.

    webgrid.co.uk gets a thumbs up

    Merry Xmas

    kerio personal firewall is an extremely good free firewall, i personally pair it with avast! antivirus, which is also free for personal use, and updates a gajillion times a day, which is always a good sign

    thought i heard a rumo that the 'free' kapersky was a watered down version, comodo is good fort a freebie but like norton i thought it was a bit bloated in the memory footprint it has

    Yep - The AOL anti virus shield is a lite version of Kapersky and as it lacks heuristics it is only a stop-gap.

    Spyware terminator has option to integrate free Clam antivirus & with Comodo firewall, things look rosy enough (but something always appears to sink yer boat lol)

    I like to disable antivirus and use different software for a fresh scan now and again.

    I suppose everyone knows, but dont run TWO antivirus proggies at the same time - pc dont like it much

    (ahhh memories of a customer sites pc rebooting infinately)
