sub £90 Walking Shoes - any recommendations?

Hi,

I'm looking to replace an ancient pair of Salomon walking shoes i have had for a long time and i was wondering if anyone has any that they would recommend.

There seems to be a huge range available now - lots more than when i bought my last ones.

I do like the Salomon brand but i'm happy to look at any which seem good value. The would be used mainly for hill walking not serious climbing. Would be nice if they could be used as everyday shoes occasionally also.

I would give the Merrell Chameleon II's my recommendation. Best pair of walking shoes I have ever owned. I have put the milletts link below, the only difference between those and mine, was that I went for the Gore Tex version. Very good shoes though, if you can take the 'different' styling!

My reccomendation? Don't buy any.

Walking shoes are a really bad idea. Without any ankle support, you're just waiting to turn an ankle, which depending on the hill you're walking up could be a painful, inonvenient or fatal injury. What you need, even for hill walking, is a boot.

My HI TECH Magnum Elites have been up every mountain in Britain over 4000', and a lot more. And that's a reccomendation.

I have a pair of the merrells, and my walking boots are salomons. Out of the 2 the salomons are more hard wearing, I also prefer a higher cut for hill walking as it allows your to cross higher water, and keeps the mud out. I am currently looking at getting some altbergs, either shoe or boot. Good leather boots will wick better than goretex lined fabric.

I have some Merrell walking boots that are light enough to be worn instead of shoes on occasion.

I would urge you to try on a lot of boots, and only buy a pair if you are 100% comfortable in them. This is not like a technology purchase where you can look a the spec. Some people recommend trying on with bare feet so that you can better feel anywhere that will rub.

A few years ago, I brought a well recommended pair of boots, that 'almost' fit. When I wore them on a day hike they pressed on a nerve and I was lame for two weeks afterwards. Luckily the shop gave me a full refund (Blacks in High Wycombe).

I've always done well with Meindl boots but I'm not sure how many pairs you could get for below £90...

I bought a pair of Karrimore Exmoor at the weekend from Millets, tried on several different brands and these were the most comfortable for my feet. Used them at the weekend, very breathable and no rubbing on the feet.

Girlfriend knows about this stuff and said exactly what others have, try lots on and find the best fitting pair. Then wear them around the house to see how they feel for longer periods before taking them out proper.

I was wondering about karrimore's but i've never bought them before.

I realise the walking shoe dont give ankle protection like boots but i think shoes will be more usefull for what i want to use them for.

Meindl boots also look nice, i want to find a local stockist to see what they feel like.

I used to use Line 7s. Nice budget boot with good insulation, fully breathable and a great sole.

Mind you, it's been 10 years since I walked (at all basically ) but in my past I did do half the Pennine Way, Offa, about 140 miles (continuous) of the N Wales coast & The Shropshire Way in them.

I also use Salomon shoes and I love them. I don't use them for hill walking at all only for general everyday walking - this is why I can recommend them to you. I googled it and I found this site, they seem to sell nice Salomon models and have reasonable prices.
