    Re: Running

I'm signed up for the Northumberland Coastal Run Can't wait, i want a good time, so i'm training as hard as i can, whilst trying to be sensible about it, i know i have a tendency to push myself too hard sometimes, but i'd love a sub 2 hour time for this run!

    Re: Running

You should aim for 1 hour 30 mins. I did about 2 hours 10 mins and my training consisted of running 3 or 4 miles the week before the run lol... Well maybe I trained a little more than that, but I didn't do much honestly. I was quite generally fit then though (from sports and gym)... My shoes were hurting my feet after 7 or 8 miles which slowed me down a lot. I reckon I could have done less than 2 hours... if I has some better running shoes (or maybe my ones needed a bit wearing in)

That's actually very important... make sure you get some very good running shoes (they are not cheap)... but you will thank me after the marathon if you get some, (or if you don't I will say "I told you so")

    Re: Running

Well my other half did the London marathon yesterday, finished it in 4h46m15s.

She has been training for months, trick is not to do full distance and work up to about 20 miles then shorten the runs in the last couple of weeks before.

Must say I am immensly proud of her

That's a great time! Give her a pat on her backside from me

Good tip too about the training
I guess for half marathons you want to train up to 10 miles then?

    Re: Running

pass my congratulations on, that's awesome!

Running's going well thanks, although i'm supposed to be doing a tempo run today but last time i went i felt like i was starting to get shin splints so i'm going to rest a few days before i go again to let my shins strengthen up.

I'm one step ahead of you again SiM i got some decent trainers and they make so much difference, really glad i got them!

My last quick run i an average 5.5mile in 44 minutes so average 8 minutes and that's a mixture of cross country and pavement. I'd still like to be going quicker because the half marathon that i'm doing is mostly cross country i think which makes it a bit slower. Longest distance i've run is just over 8 miles i think.

    Re: Running

Thanks guys, I will pass it on, she will appreciate it.

She is currently laying on the sofa doing not much moving, rather stiff I feel.

(And SiM hands off and no comments about being stiff).

    Re: Running

Yes, well done to her indeed.

Just finishing a marathon's an achievement but that's a good time.

I always swear by Asics for running.

    Re: Running

I swear by Nike personally, my ones have the strengthened arch section and are possibly the most comfortable trainers I have ever had (although I seem to say that every time).

I think different brands suit/fit different people better as I have never found asics very comfy but know loads of people that do. (Including my girlfriend).

    Re: Running

There are many factors which need to consider when choosing running shoes:
    1) level of arch - need to match your foot obviously (I am very flat footed)
    2) the way your foot lands when you run. There are specific designs for over-pronators and under-pronators (I am a severe overpronater, so if I used wrong shoes there is a high chance that I will twist my ankle)
    3) what surface you intend to run on
    4) cushioning
    5) more that I can't think of

The right shoe might not be cheap, but it will help prevent injury

I recommend the London Marathon Shop in Covent Garden. They assess the way you walk and can tell what type of running shoe you need. I was very happy with their service and will happily buy from them again (although they are not the cheapest place).

    Re: Running

Yeah, over-pronater here too. Definitely worth spending the extra £s for a decent set-up.

    Re: Running

I did exactly that SiM well nearly, there's a great running shop in loughborough called running fox i think. The person in the shop looked at how i walked and the type of surface i was intending to run on and then gave me a few pairs to try. In the end i went with a make i'd not heard of before called Brookes and they're awesome, really comfortable to run in and no blisters!

good post , exactly what i need as my right foot becomes painfull ( around the metatarsals) whenever i full out sprint, i think its because of my strange feet (very high instep and very wide) i have to wear a size too big just so they fit.
