5 minute mile challenge - any others interested in this sort of thing?

    Hi all,

Anyone on the forums interested in dying by voluntarily hurtling around a running track?

I've always been above to hit a 6 minute mile, but a friend recently ran next to me on a treadmill and now I have this idea that I want to do a 5 minute mile.

Last night I did a 5:45, so I'm getting there. But I'd really like to see whether there are any others who have done such a thing or are aiming to challenge themselves on a mile [any speed].

    Cheers
    Sean

Since you mentioned, yes that's the secondary challenge I've undertaken recently (my other one being the 100 push ups challenge). Right now it's awesome, my last mile run was at 7:39. But even my best mile run ever is 6:30 if I remember right. I'll be ecstatic if I can even hit 5:30 this lifetime.

4 laps of a standard track.... don't know - I'd have to try it. I've not run that sort of distance since I was in school, and I was hitting about 7'30" back then. I just worked out that I averaged about 5' a mile on the bike last Monday - over 20 miles or so, and that was with some pretty big hills in too.... interest is piqued now to see how fast I could do it on foot...

I did a 4:55 in secondary school a couple of years ago so I'll give it a go tomorrow when I'm at the gym

    Show off

I did the sport relief mile a few years ago and made - iirc - 8.36 with virtually no training (just a couple of warm up runs to make sure I could still handle the distance without completely embarrassing myself ). I reckon that I could maybe get down to around 7 minute with a lot of training and hard work, but I doubt I could get much below that - I'm really not built for running! I'll stick to my bike, I think...

I do about 7:30, last time I looked, but that was on a 2+ mile run.

Am curious to see what I can do if just pushing for time, and a single mile...age (42) is against me, but you never know

Re: 5 minute mile challenge - any others interested in this sort of thing?

Glad to see there's some interest.

My friend, the one who was running with me, pushed herself the other day and hit an 8:00 min mile. That was after 2 spin sessions that day! And she's 37. Her goal is to hit a 7 min mile and I'll think she'll do that in a few months easily. Though her resting heart rate is in the 30's ...

I've got a weird heart and my heart rate goes over 200 for a 25 year old and takes an AGE to come down. Maybe even hours. Something genetic apparently.

Added a post on my blog about how to work out the speed you'll need to achieve to do whatever time you're aiming for. A 5 minute mile is running at 19.2 kmph

    4:55 would be awesome!

I reckon I could do it in 6 mins with a little training and 5.30 with a lot of training. 5 mins? Probably beyond me, but I might give it a go.

Which track are you planning to run on - if it's not too far from Reading I may be interested in joining you *ponders where running spikes are*

Re: 5 minute mile challenge - any others interested in this sort of thing?

As I am British I use Imperial measurements.

    a 10 min mile is 6mph
an 8 min mile is 7.5mph
    a 6 min mile is 10mph
    a 5 min mile is 12mph

I aim to run constant for 2 miles at 10mph today at the gym. Don't forget running on a treadmill is easier than running on normal ground surface as your feet are taken away from you rather than you pushing off.

I'm no physicist, but isn't it the lack of wind resistance that makes a treadmill easier rather than the treadmill's motion itself?

Yeah I'll add at least 20 seconds on your time for treadmill vs track. But treadmills are great for checking speeds, cals and adding an incline. Also there's lots of beautiful women around treadmills too

Currently it's all on treadmill at the moment - running with inclines. But otherwise it'll be at the Maidenhead rugby club. If you ever fancy meeting up for some training I'll be more than up for that. Happy to travel to Reading too.

Tonight I'm going for some 400m intervals and tomorrow cross training with a long mountain bike ride.

That does make a big difference too! But then because you're going around the track and hopefully facing into and away from the wind equally it may equalise the benefit and drawback.

Running a race against heavy wind is ALWAYS a pain in the arse! On training days though, just turn around and run with it

It should have been worded as 'air resistance', since even discounting any wind it's still easier on a treadmill since you're not having to push through the air as you run along, because you're standing still. Running on a treadmill is like having the wind blowing with you at the same speed as you're running.

As for a 5 minute mile, the last time I timed my self running was at school 7 or 8 years ago, and IIRC that was about 2min 15sec over 800m. Pretty sure I couldn't manage a 5 minute mile these days though.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

What about if there is a plane on the treadmill with you?!

Seriously guys - this sounds like a challenge - I'm not much of a runner (or rather I'm more of a sprinter when I was at school and am pretty much no use...) but I'm wanting to give it a go too. no way get a 5min mile - I'd be happy for under 10min.

I used to be able to swim it in under 30mins... Pools around my place aren't the easiest to get to though...

I read an article once that said if you run faster in places with fumes / pollutants etc you actually absorb less of them. There was a huge difference between a 12kph jog and a 16kph run - 18% iirc.

So no excuses now. Just run faster
