Russia wins 2018 World Cup, Qatar to host 2022 World Cup
Russia will host the 2018 football World Cup and Qatar the 2022 tournament, Fifa has announced after a tense two days of glitzy presentations by the bidding nations and secretive voting by the 22-member executive committee of world football’s governing body.

Russia defeated England and combined bids from Belgium and the Netherlands, and Spain and Portugal, while Qatar triumphed over the United States, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

Fifa said the breakdown of the voting would be announced later on Thursday.

No :s I would have liked England to get it if im honest - theres a chance I might have actually got to a game! Whereas in Russia its not going to happen and Qatar - well nuff said about that really.

I just didnt think England would get it because Spain and Portugal and Russia had such strong bids. And like every thing else English the English news agencies have it set as a certainty that England will win everything which usually turns out not to be the case.

X Factor's Simon Cowell, model Kelly Brook and TV presenter Stephen Fry are some of the celebrities backing England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup. Fry says: "No other country in the world can match our infatuation for the game and this is the reason I believe England would be an ideal host."

After dusting off a couple of 'celebs' and the comments on collected on the beeb I'm not so disappointed; perhaps we need to analyse why we didn't win it. I have alot of respect for Stephen Fry but he must have been on the payroll; his cameo for a technology release comes to mind. Our bid is lead by someone who plays in the MLS and has won nothing at national level.

LMAO at the last one. The same people who failed with this bid have done nothing to improve the game or take any responsibility for our thrashing by the Germans at the last one. When they were in the same position we are now but they sat down and had a long hard look at themselves. The FA are as corrupt as any FIFA official, the difference is they don't have to ask for bribes as we give them a fat pay packet.

On a positive note Blatter is starting to look old.

In a statement from shadow Secretary of State for Sport Ivan Lewis, the Labour Party called for an independent root and branch inquiry into the failed bid.

"Despite the impressive efforts of Team England, supporters will be bitterly disappointed at England's failure to land the 2018 World Cup," said Lewis. "This follows on from the England team's poor performance in South Africa.

"Serious questions have to be answered as to how we can learn lessons from these significant setbacks to build a better future.

"The Coalition and the football authorities should now set up an independent root and branch inquiry into all aspects of how our national game is run."

Err... wouldn't the money for such an inquiry be better spent on the nation as a whole to bring a better future, rather than on the failings of one of the most morally bankrupt sports in the world.
