    So I signed up...

    for the Manchester 10K run.

Well I say me, its me and a friend.

We have both been discussing getting back into the gym to lose weight and get fit as we both need it, then on the spur of a moment we have now signed up for the Machester 10K.

This gives us four months to get fit for the run, shouldnt be too hard with going to the gym twice a week and playing football, I am confident we can get fit and complete the run, our target is to beat the longest time set last year which was 3 hours and 30 minutes, ideally I would like to beat the two hour mark.

My main issue is that as some may know, i suffer from shin splints and on a 10K run I can see it causing me some real pain and havoc so was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to stop this or reduce the pain?

I am thinking of wearing some sort of compression type things on my legs as this should help.

Oh what have I let myself in for!

The best thing I could suggest is just find some really comfortable proper running shoes. They really do make running a lot easier.

See, this is where the proper lies.

I have some proper running shoes yet I still get shin splints. I feel it may be down to my weight or something, if its not that, then my running style could be the cause.

I can't run as I have dodgy knees. So, what's the best way of losing weigh, other than running?

You could walk it in two hours mate, you should be aiming at under 1 hour .

Erm....any excercise that doesn't put a lot of strain on the knees? Cycling, swimming....surprisingly even powerlifting is very good for knees....plenty of choice.

Bit of a late reply from me but with football and the gym im hoping I can do well.

My main issue would be shin splints, im going to try and put some serious runs in and see if I can condition my legs for the 10k.

Good luck with it - I did the York 10k a couple of years back - was supposed to run it with Rox0r but he was tres ill on the day so I did it on my own. I did a load of training then twisted my ankle about 3 months before the event running on wet grass... I then slacked off and didn't really do any more training until 2 or 3 weeks before.

I'm a pretty unfit mofo, and I finished in... 52 mins something, if I recall (and I had a few spates of taking it *very* easy, so I reckon with training I could have done it in about 45). I aimed for 1hr 12, so was very pleased.

Considering doing it again this year, though I really would need to get back on the treadmill. My running style isn't exactly perfect (I overpronate rather a lot) but my NB running shoes help me correct that a little without killing myself.

    When's your run?

Depends massively on the terrain - throw in even a small amount of incline and it can make serious impact on times. After running the York 10k I was tempted to do something a little more intense and looked at the Castle Howard trail (another 10k, but with loads of hills) - I bailed after training for hill runs for a month or so.
