    Anyone use sports GPS watches?

I've decided to enter a triathlon. I have a Garmin 705 from back when I was doing a lot of bike miles prior to Christmas, but it's not really suitable for running, and definitely not usable for swimming. Does anyone here use something like the Forerunner 310xt or Timex Ironman GPS?

1st race is a week on Monday

My wife uses a garmin 210 forerunner. She's really pleased with it. She describes it as one of those changes in life that once made, makes you wonder how you ever survived without it.

I'm not sure how good the 210 would be for swimming. I doubt the HR strap would work fully immersed, but the gps might manage.

Re: Anyone use sports GPS watches?

Well I splashed a bit of cash and bought myself a Garmin 310XT. The cycling and running work great, but it goes a bit mental in the pool:

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/87946864

If you click aeriel view, you can see I've been swimming in the trees!

Apparently the solution is to put it in your swimming cap.

Well some months on, it still seems to work great - although it still goes mental in the pool. Heartily recommended.

I use Garmin 305 for running only. Although people tend to find it ugly, it is a great piece of kit. Having said that a 310XT must be great

Re: Anyone use sports GPS watches?

Yeah, love the 310XT, the only problem I have is when swimming in open water it. The signal get attenuated by the water. The 910 just got released though, so I may upgrade to that in the reasonably near future.

Re: Anyone use sports GPS watches?

My flatmate is a triathlete and I'm a keen cyclist. But she doesn't use any Gizmo's though and I generally use my iPhone for tracking cycling.

Can the 310XT handle GPX files for routing? I'm looking for a possible dedicated GPS and as I'm starting to run more something small like the 310 could be just the trick, but I need to be able to load routes as well.

Re: Anyone use sports GPS watches?

Probably a bit amateur, but the cheaper way of doing it is downloading an iphone app which does roughly the same - assuming you don't have to go out and buy an iphone first!

    Seems like you can:

I personally know where I'm going when I run, and use a Garmin 705 for cycling.

Re: Anyone use sports GPS watches?

The EDGE 705 looks a bit more suitable as it would be for cycling. I normally know where I'm going but have started doing long distance night rides such as the Exmouth Exodus and the Dunwich Dynamo etc. The DD wasn't too bad as there are so many riders on it but the EE is a much smaller ride so a GPS would have made it far easier.

What kind of rides are the DD and EE?

The actual routing bit on the unit sucks. ie "Take me from 'current location' to 'Exmouth town centre', but you can preprogram the unit using something like BikeRouteToaster, and it's then pretty awesome.

I did Shepperton -> Luton with no problems (with the GPS - legs were a bit knackered!). Garmin have also recently released the Edge 800, so you might find a cheap 705 2nd hand - no plans to upgrade myself as it don't see any benefit for the 800 over the 705.

I am going to upgrade from the 310XT to the 910XT when it's available though for the extra swimming functionality as that's probably my weakest triathlon discipline.

Well it may do bits of the same, but I can't really take it swimming, and it's not splash or waterproof on long rides/runs, or very rugged. It's also pretty difficult to wrist mount or bike mount an iPhone.

I did investigate it briefly, but you couldn't get heart rate monitors, cadence sensors, and nothing seemed to have anything like the Garmin connect website either.

    Apart from that......
