Food/Drink to take with me on a long bike ride?

Me and some mates are doing the Scarborough to Whitby route again on the bikes, I was living on pretty much water and hobnobs much of the way last time .

Just out of interest, what do you suggest I take to eat/drink (or buy once I get to Whitby)?

Food: Something not too filling but something to keep me going and fill me with energy.

Drink: As long as it doesn't taste like crap, I'm fine with water if that's the best thing to take (probably is).

    Thanks!

PS: What should I eat the day before? Porridge and Pasta? (not together.. )

Side Note: Ride in total is around 50 miles.

so.. in my opionion i'd always take fig rolls, some raw jelly, some penut butter sarnies and a random pack of bickies. water is cool, or you could take some energy drink - i just go with water..

porrage is good the morning before, i'd get some scrambled eggs in too.

mate dont eat anything to heavy, when riding your body just cant digest heavy food (high fats and proteins enriched foods) so be careful what you eat when your doing it.

Porridge is a good start for the day and so is pasta for a snack, complex carbohydrates release energy slowly which is useful for a long ride

As for drink like you said water would be the best bet

To be honest, if I were doing that, I wouldn't do anything different and have my normal 2 slices of toast (or bacon sarnie if im feeling like I can be botherd ) and a cup of tea for breakfast But I would be doing on a BMX....so....well....yea

Something light for breakfast, like has already been suggested, but make sure you dont eat anything for around 2 hours before your ride, then you will be fine as long as feeling sick goes.

I would have lucazade sport orange, maybe a bottle or two before you start, some during and definatly some after. When I go walking, this stuff (clear bottle, sports cap) keeps me going great.

Banana's - plenty of energy and carbs.

Salted peanuts - slow release energy and salt will help aviod cramp.

Aviod chocolate, you just get a quick sugar rush followed by a low. I would not have porrage in the morning personally as it slows me down, same with bread. Pasta might be good, but not to much.

As for drink, mix pure orange juice 50/50 with water and add a touch of salt to. Otherwise, just go with water.

Take a banana for a mid ride boost. Its simple sugars get converted straight to energy. Take water to drink but dont drink too much all at once...

Isotonic energy drink like lucozade or powerade for when you get tried perhaps?

Personally, i would get some fish and chips while i was there but then i have very little willpower when it comes to food

Have you got a camelbak? If not get down to lidl next thrusday and pick yourself one up for a tenner. Plenty of water, a bottle of lucozade (Or PSP rego if you can find it). Trackers are good. Last big ride i went on I took:
    3 litres in the camelbak
    2xcorned beef sandwiches
    3x trackers
2x packs of energy gel (which tastes like sugary vomit, but its good stuff)

    Thanks guys, great suggestions!.

@hurlach: I don't have a camelbak, I'll just take my odinary rucksack - was fine before, and it holds lots of stuff.

bananas are good, but only in moderation - eat a whole bunch and you'll be cramping your style

DATES are the bestest thing for that energy. They keep you trucking forever.

Plus the oats / porridge / pasta for breakfast.
