    Neck pain after cycling

    Good Afternoon folks,

Summer Holidays up here in Scotland, so im finally getting back into cycling - not going far yet, did 5miles yesterday and only did 2.5 miles today (yesterdays 5 was that run twice), that was about 11:30am this morning.

As I sit here and type this, my nexk is still fairly sore - not unbearably sore, but enough to notice it all the time.

Any ideas why - is it just because I havent cycled for ages or something else?

    Cheers,
    David

Could just be that you were sitting with your neck in a different possition thatn normal for an extended period of time. Perhaps giving it a rest tomorrow would help it fade. If it gets worse seek medical advice.

What type of bike are you riding and are you sure there is nothing else that could aggravate your neck such as new pillow, sitting in one position for long periods (not moving head) or even not keeping chin in?

muscles in neck aching the day after exercise is not unusual if they are normally not in use that much, expect a few aches/pains like this and don't worry. if it continues then see a physio not a GP cause they know jack.

try taking the peak off your helmet. if you have a high saddle, low bars, and a peak on, you have to lean your head back to see forwards.. puts straign/causes injury to your neck. adjust any of those criteria (helmet is often easiest) to see some difference

Neck ache can occur because one of the vital parts of your bike is in the wrong position,
Be it the bars are too low, or the saddle is at the wrong angle/position.

Try experimenting with seat level, try using a spirit level to get it flat and central on the rails. Make fine adjustments until you feel comfortable
