    Free Weights Myth

    I have just bought some free weights to do at home as i dont have enough time to go to the gym everyday. I was talkin to one of my mates and he said that doing free weights makes you go shorter?!

    I bought them just for light excercise...(i do lots of sports - hence no time for gym) but i am only 5.11 and dnt wanna get even smaller. So, does any1 know if this is a fact or just some old myth tryin to scare people off free weights?

    What? Heard a few daft things in my time but that is a new one!

    Free weights are different to other weights because.....? Ignore him, don't see Arnie being a shortie did you? Thought not.

    You have to be careful with exercise but especially free weights and need the correct technique which if not followed can lead to injury so be careful and build up gradually.

    No more so than a day of standing up, I'd say. It may increase the rate at which your spine compacts and your posture deteriorates throughout the day, but a good nights sleep would sort that out. I suppose you can try to limit the effect of the increased weight by paying more attention to correct posture, perhaps even wearing a lifting belt for added lower back support.

    I spent most of my teens doing free weights at home and I'm still 6ft2

    I'd be more worried about it lengthening your arms

    A decent set of gloves and a belt will do you the world of good btw.

    Utter cobblers!! Use your weights and forget what he said. Bear in mind we're all taller in the morning when we get out of bed (plus all the chips on my shoulder keep me at 5' 10")

    Depends how young you start training, i'd say, just help and carry s few old ladies accross a busy road now and then thats more than enough work out.
    as long as you help these OAPS with sufficiant rest breaks and a good diet, you should grow into the shoe size size u want.

    Mom told me that years ago too. I didn't heed her advice back then (teen years -> rebellious years ), and experts today (well, at least on Google) would seem to agree with me.

    That said, I have no idea what I can use as an excuse for my (lack of) height

    dude, call ur mate a cab... I think his time is up. Im 6ft4, and have grown ( if anything since using free weights+spinning) Do the weights, and ull be fine. Trust

    To some degree, a similar stretching of the spine happens to you every night. When you lie down, gravity isn’t pushing down on your vertebrae. You can do your own experiments with a yardstick. If you measure your height carefully as soon as you get up or while you are still lying down, you will find that you’re about a centimeter or two taller. That’s not as significant as what astronauts experience in space, but the principle is the same. As the day passes, your vertebrae will be compressed through normal activities, and you’ll lose those few centimeters you “grew” overnight.
