Re: Do you have a SSD? if so is it worth it?

Yes I've got 3, 2 in my main machine and one in my netbook.

The two in the main machine are a 60Gb Vertex as a boot drive and then a 60Gb Agility as my data drive, I used to have a 30gb Agility in there as the temp/swap file drive but I replaced i with a 320Gb 7200rpm drive and put the 30Gb Agility in my N220..

tbh for what I use the PC for I could of stuck with normal drives as all it does is a bit of photoshop/website/browsing stuff and then games of IL2, CS:S or Alien Swarm however its just loads smoother running the SSD's.

The netbook, as its running a pretty weak N450 chip the SSD makes a fair amount of difference compared to the 250Gb 5200rpm drive that it came with.

Bought one for my main machine, then seeing the huge difference it made,
I ended up buying SSDs for all my PCs and laptops !

Re: Do you have a SSD? if so is it worth it?

I replied "Yes but it wasn't worth it" because I paid £169 for an 80Gb Intel drive, the rev 2 version, but I don't consider it was worth every penny. Having said that I recently built a pc for a friend and couldn't believe how slow it was to boot up. I don't think i could go back to a normal disk drive now but they're still too expensive.

At the moment, no I don't. But when I did, my conclusion was that they were nice, and effective, but too expensive and no, it isn't worth it. But the "worth" is very subjective, and other people will say they're worth every penny. To them, they are. To me, they're not. Though they're slowly getting closer.

I've got 4 systems with them in now - when I'm using them, I don't notice how fast they are but when I'm on a system with a mechanical disk I do notice the difference!

They're overpriced but given the use I've had out of mine I can't complain (too much!)

Yes. More so when my mate was round the other day and i booted up, his reaction: "how fast does your load up !?" - obviously my e-peen is pretty frickin huge now, but on a more serious point his reaction shows how those still rocking HDD's notice the improvement from a distance, so to speak, themselves.

Re: Do you have a SSD? if so is it worth it?

I don't have one but, I'm very tempted to buy one. It is just the cost per GB and then deciding which is the best to buy. I almost ordered a Crucial C300 64GB but, Then changed my mind and though the OCZ vertex 2E might be better (and more expensive).

Re: Do you have a SSD? if so is it worth it?

I have one (a 60GB OCZ Vertex 2E) which I paid £135 for. While I am very pleased with it, especially for the usual boot up but also for copying large VM files to and from a fast RAID0 array (250MB/s), I do find space constrictive. If I had the oppertunity again, I would jsut save up longer and get a 120GB edition as that would save having to install a game, play it and then uninstall it.

Outlook has actually benefitted greatly - I was quite surprised at that. Quietness is the other factor I suddenly notice when going back to a regular computer.

I've got one on a Macbook Air running Windows 7 32 bit through Bootcamp

I have to say I don't really notice much improvement in boot up time over a normal Macbook Pro 13" running the same software.

Re: Do you have a SSD? if so is it worth it?

Wierdest thing I noticed with an SSD. Webpages loaded faster
That's more of a comment on crappy browser design of MSIE than how great SSD's are.
They will hit my price/performance demands when they are about 1/2 the price/gb they currently are. 160GB for about £160+VAT is what I'm after.
Hopefully the 25nm Intel SSD's will meet that target.

One of the best £: performance wise probably is the Vertex 2E at its current price.

Will be upgrading my system soon and they're very tempting, nice too see almost all who've bought are happy with them, gives me a lot to think about.

Re: Do you have a SSD? if so is it worth it?

Got my 60GB Vertex just over a year ago for £130, which was a bargain back then. Worth every penny tbh.

Glad I had a peep at this thread. Heard that the Sandforce were the new Indilinx of this year but I didnt realise how cheap they were, Vertex 2E for £137 Probably go buy one when I get a new laptop.

love mine - got another for my laptop too - not installed it yet but looking forward to the speed boost.

its also a great, if expensive ways to get very high IOPS in a home virtualisation lab.
